Got this from desp a while back. Cheers!
From a 500ml bottle into a snifter
Barleywine aged in Apple Brandy then Double Oak Rye Whisky barrels
In memory of Egg Callaghan
APPEARANCE: Foamed out initially, but poured fine, oddly enough. A small, one finger, looser, light tan head recedes really quickly to a splotchy wisp and ring. Clear, dark rosewood or blood red with no carbonation evident. Looks mostly flat half way through though.
SMELL: Lovely aroma of vanilla cream, milk chocolate, oak, brandy and whisky aromas, burnt toffee and butterscotch with hints of dark fruits. Aromatic and enticing.
TASTE: Oak, brandy, alcohol, sweet toffee and vanilla cream up front. Quite boozy at the swallow, with a bold finish of brandy and whisy, oak flavors, vanilla, milk chocolate, sweet burnt toffee and brown sugar, as well as plenty of alcohol linger on the palate.
PALATE: Lighter body and slightly higher carbonation. Foamy on the palate, prickly too, goes down with a sharp burn and finishes quite sticky on the palate. Lots of heat lingers. Alcoholic and prickly for the most part.
OVERALL: This was scary at the start, but the aroma is wonderful and the flavor holds its own too. Only the feel is rough going, even for the style. If the initial foam show was taken care of and the feel tamed, the aroma and flavor would put this into the next stratosphere. As it is, it's enjoyable but not quite as awesome as it really deserves to be. Thanks again, desp!
