First 500ML bottle cracked from the El Cat Edition 14. Been in since the beginning & we’ll see if there’s a 15th in my future. Getting hard to justify unless the beers are uniformly killer.

It’s dark. Little to no toppings. The pinot is prominent in the nose: pretty much all dark fruits.

Mayall’s Object avoids the worst blahs of a wine/stout mix. As the nose goes the taste, with a lot of wine-based fruits sans the sharpness that can soil such experiences. The balance of what exists is subdued. Light smoke, old tobacco in a bar that’s soaked into the ‘70s curtains, & an aftertaste that screeches “you left me open overnight!” Even half this mini-bottle shared with my wife is too much.

What seemed pretty good shortly after the pop has devolved into something I don’t want to finish. Not an encouraging start for my future with the beloved institution of El Cat.

500mL bottle
poured into whatever weird little pseudo tulip that was the official El Cat XIV glass
reviewed: Aug 13 2022

A: Opaque black, 3 plus fingers width of dark khaki colored head. Dissipates moderately fast and leaves no lacing. 4.25

S: Aroma is red wine, bakers cocoa, roasted malt. There’s a somewhat strange artificial also plastic like aroma which is a bit distracting but fortunately it’s mild. Pretty big vinous grape and other dark fruit notes. 3.75

T: Taste is barrel up front then very porter esque on the back end and finish with roastiness, a bit herbaceous, unsweetened cocoa, some bitterness. The barrel notes are quite prominent, then yield perfectly to the base beer characters. This is really an excellent tasting beer. 4.5

M/D: Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied but not thick, actually on the thinner end for the style; don’t know what the ABV is here but it’s not noticeable. It’s quite drinkable for a BA imperial porter. 4.25

O: Overall, this is a really nice beer. I think some of these El Cat beers are just trying to do too much with all the adjuncts and barrel aging, but this one is a relatively straight forward adjunctless offering that does a really great job on letting both the base beer and the barrel notes shine, yet mingle wonderfully together. 4.25
