Tasted on tap at the Cigar City Spruce Street Taproom.
Nice appearance. A little hazy, but it shows great swirls of tan head on a brown beer. Very interesting aromas of brown sugar, red wine, raisins and oak. Deep flavors of tawny port, wheat and light smoke. Medium body with light to moderate carbonation. Medium hops bitterness and lots of warming alcohol. This is an unusual, port-like beer whose sweetness will put off some, but I love its complexity.

A: Pours a dark mahogany brown, one plus fingers width of white heady, pretty good clarity. Decent retention. 4.25
S: Aroma is big caramel, some belgian quad like spice, some white wine grapes but they are very subtle. 4.25
T: Taste is very sweet, lots of fruity phenols, big apple, sweet white wine, big caramel. It’s cloyingly sweet without much else to balance. 3.75
M/D: Medium bodied with appropriate carbonation. ABV perhaps on the lower end for a wheatwine and really some booziness might balance it out. Drinkability is limited due to the one dimensional sweetness. 3
O: I really enjoy the wheatwine style when done well but this one falls short for me. 3.75

Working through what may be my last 500ML El Cat bottles for a while as I opted out for round 15 – after being in since the beginning. Split with the wife.
The pour is a fuzzy crimson with persistent whiteness on top. The nose is a copy of the wine drippings from my wife’s red wine box. No apparent beer nosed.
Saying Centaurus is wine heavy would be a gross misdemeanor of an understatement. If this were a little sharper, with less body & more oak, one could mistake this for a pretty good Pinot. Sweet, too. No beer taste. At a reasonable price point (& ABV) this would make a good summertime deck sipper.
A noble effort but, as with my beer last night, too heavy a hand on the barrels has obliterated whatever the base beer brung to the table. Still pretty good.
