Pours an opaque black color with a thick tan head. Head falls slow to a minimal one. Thin lace.

Roasted malt aroma with hints of bitter chocolate and coffee.

Strong roasted flavor with an underlying sweetness. Rye flavors are subtle and coffee flavors are not.

Medium bodied and a little chewy in the mouthfeel.

Good stuff. Worth seeking out.

Had this at Datz in Tampa on 7/12/11. This was probably my most memorable beer from my Florida trip.

Served in a pint glass which was unfortunately filled to the brim so I have no idea if this beer produces any appreciable head. There was a miniscule ring of tan bubbles though. Soggy Loaf is black and fairly thick for a porter. The appearance reminded me of melted licorice.

The aroma is built upon faint pumpernickel and browned wheat bread. Mild fudge and warmed barley also add to the wonderful bread-loaf aroma. At times this can be very subtle, but when you catch each scent melded as one, you realize that this beer most certainly lives up to its name.

As for the taste.... wow. There are lots of rich chocolate flavors up front. Then comes the pumpernickel and rye in succession. This is a beer in which you taste rye as a bread grain, versus the more typical spicy flavor most brewers use it for. Warm porter flavors lie just beneath the surface.

Very creamy with super low carbonation. This is like drinking fresh doughy soft bread.

Overall I really loved this stuff. I wish it were bottled. This is a must try if you're ever in Tampa.

Well, this certainly isn't retired as the record here on BA seems to indicate. It's very much alive and kicking, and as a few others have stated, this is a drink brewed specifically for Datz Deli in Tampa.

I had this on tap at Datz.

A: Dark, dark brown, almost black but not quite, with a half finger or so light brown head that just kept floating, floating, floating....

S: Definitely sweet rye... No question about it. The dark malt that made up this brew was exquisite..

T: The first thing I noticed was the mildly dry, yet fruity finish. Somewhat coffee-like, but I'm still not sure if that was coffee at all. It may have just been dark malt wizardry.

M: thick and a bit heavy. Aenemically carbonation, sweet, but not too.

O: The name for this brew was perfect. This was a real treat to get to try this, and if I'm ever back in the area again, I will definitely order this one again at Datz to go along with my Rueben sandwich.

32oz growler. A generous gift from Dstructo as we were leaving Churchill's last night after the Lost Abbey Saints and Sinners party. Thanks Ryan!

A: Poured into my Bruery snifter, the beer has a nice frothy beige head with good retention and scattered lacing. The color is a brown so dark it borders on black.

S: Lightly roasted malt, molasses, caraway, a dash of caramel, a whisper of coffee, and well integrated Rye. A very nice aroma, exhibiting subtlety and depth.

T: Bittersweet chocolate with notes of caraway and rye, as well as a lower moderate roasted quality and a subtle espresso flavor. The beer is slightly sweet, though it finishes dry. The finish is bittersweet chocolate with rye and a lingering roasted bitterness. Chocolate and a spicy sensation linger on the palate for some time.

M: Full, creamy, sticky. Carbonation is at a moderate level. The growler held up quite well.

Overall: A well done rye porter that I enjoyed quite a bit. Recommended.

Growler shared by a generous soul from down in FL.

Pours one shade from black with a one-finger tan head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of smooth roasted malts with large amounts of dark chocolate. Also present are hints of spicy rye.

Tastes similar to how it smells, though the rye is more prevalent than in the nose. Equal amounts of dark chocolate flavors and roasted malts kick things off. Shortly thereafter the dark chocolate flavors segue into lighter milk chocolate. Midway through the sip solid amounts of earthy and lightly spicy rye flavors work their way into things, drying out the flavor profile. The rye and chocolate flavors carry through to a moderately bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a nice thickness with smooth carbonation.

Drinkability is also very good. I finished my glass quickly and could easily have another.

Overall I was impressed with this beer and am looking forward to seeing more porters out of CCB. Well worth a shot.

I love being out and getting to try local or bar only ticks! Had no idea what the Soggy Loaf was so I ordered it, better find after I learned it was a CCB. On-tap poured into a pint glass... Pours a very dark brown, sheeny glow. Not much, or any, carbonation on this though... The aroma is a touch light but its very good, so much going on but well integrated. It has a great standard porter backbone of coffee with some nice chocolate, but then there is tons of grainy rye, its deep and strong, they meld 50/50 perfectly. Some additional notes of caramel and hops add even more. Smells great... The taste is equally impressive, an extension of the nose, its just outstanding. Some bitter coffee at first, chocolate undertones, rye, with a slight pine finish.

This is one of my favorite CCB beers, this is a must try at Datz!! !

Brewed by CCB for Datz Deli. Only called "Soggy Loaf" on-premise at Datz. Otherwise simply entitled "Pumpernickel Rye Porter."

A - Brown, verging on black, with thin but persistent mocha head and spotty lace.

S - The aroma is hop-centric by a small margin, followed by the smell of charcoal and roast grain with a slight sweet-sour twang. Of the three recent Porters brewed by CCB (this, Jose Marti, and Puppy's Breath) I like it more than JMP and very slightly less than PBP.

T - Tastes very much like the nose suggests, blending piney and citric hop flavors with charred and roasted grain. Nothing stands out tremendously, but it is generally flavorful and enjoyable as such.

M - Creamy, rich, softly (well-) carbonated.

D - This is also a great beer for pairing with food, as intended...
