Oh my!!! Totally lucked out to have a friend pick up some beers for me and this was one of them. Freekin’ great beer. I shared it with a friend and his smile equaled mine. He is 81 and I am 77. I think this, for my taste buds, is one of the best beers I have had from CC! I hope this isn’t a one shot deal beer!

From a 500ml bottle, released November 2023. Served in a tulip.
Pours straight-out motor oil-blackish-brown with a scant quarter-finger of fizzy head. No retention at all to speak off, promptly imploding down into a narrow mocha collar and a grudgingly rousable thin spattering of lacing.
Nose is sharp and exotically spicy. Aroma of burnt fennel which isn’t to say ‘vegetal’ - it must be the mezcal barrel but it’s burnt leaves and brutally strong licorice and it’s one of the most enticing aromas I’ve ever encountered.
Taste is similar to the nose but less acrid, more smoky-roasty, and just a little sweet. That smoky, burnt fennel/licorice character dominates but also teasing out flavours of molasses and chicory. French roast coffee. Burnt sugar.
Feel is silky-smooth and medium-plus bodied, feeling a bit lighter owing to super-fine, prickly carbonation. There’s a sugar water sort of quality without any real, actual sweetness or syrupiness - whatever exactly that means.
Overall, oh, wow, that was different - entirely in a good way. I can’t say that I know for mezcal, and I keep describing the taste as being like fennel, or licorice, and I know that’s not right - more like a smoky-fruity-spicy exotic barrel taste - maybe a little like an ancho chili/fennel bulb love child? but, whatever, I need more.
(I’m looking at Compañia Cervecera Hércules’ Calmécac and wondering how to get some).
