Pours very dark brown with a big, medium tan head that filled 2/3 of the pint glass. A second pour showed a distinct color difference between the two halves of the head. After a few minutes of settling, the head measures nearly an inch of fluffy goodness. A decent amount of lacing is promised and delivered.
Smell is rich, like old leather with notes of spices like gingerbread, molasses and clove with malt as a backbone. A well balanced nose.
Taste is is less well developed. Toasted malt with some hops presence, a light spice note and a solid alcohol appearance.
Warming from the lips to the stomach. Medium-full body though with a somewhat watery finish. Slightly drying at the end as well.
If the taste had fulfilled the expectation from the nose, this would be a serious winter warmer. As it stands, its still a nice brew but one in need of some refinement, assuming they make it again.
