St. Elias Sunfire Saison pours up with a streaming effervescence that creates a creamy whitish head that persists nicely above the slightly hazy, peach golden body. The zesty aroma shows some phenolic spiciness with hints of chamomile, grains of paradise & lemon verbena followed by a citric fruitiness of bitter orange peel, lemon rind & pink grapefruit which underlies the grainy maltiness. Just a touch of earthy-spicy (Styrian Goldings?) hops as it warms in hand. The flavor starts off a bit cloying, but the spiciness from the actual spice additions + the yeast quickly displaces the sweetness while the marked bitterness is supported nicely by the underlying maltiness creating a surprisingly balanced slightly acidic, off-dry finish. This finely crafted, artisanal "Saison Americain" shows some complexity & finesse. They are certainly doing things right up in Soldotna and this is just the thing to cool you down from the Sun's Fire! The 1L "Bomber" growlers are very cool. Here's to the mighty Mount Saint Elias!

Tasted on draft on 6/19/2010.

When my pint arrived it was a hazy orange-honey color, with a nice head. The aroma was just what you'd expect from a Belgian saison: earthy, spicy, maybe a little citrus, some hoppiness. On the palate, Sunfire is classic Belgian; it's spicy, a little bit tart, and a bit dry. Comparing it to a Saison Dupont, the stereotypical Belgian saison, Sunfire is not quite as dry and not as hoppy, but it's well within the style boundaries and delicious to boot. ABV is 6.4%, so it should be treated with respect. Taken all-in-all, I think Sunfire Saison may be the best beer St. Elias has released to date, with the possible exception of some of their barrel-aged blends.
