Always a house favorite in the winter, this ESB maintains the same balance as the Alewife, but with loads more malt and hops.

I had a 1/2-pint ($2.75) of this after lunch with Alewife on 09DEC11.
Filling a small fluted glass, it was a deep copper hue and a touch cloudy. Head was tan, thin and fine, and left a nice trace o' lace. Body was in the middle of the range, and light carbo gave it a pleasant feel going down. The nose gave off some enticing caramel notes, with a minimal amount of hopping noted.
Flavor started off with light sweetness in the form of caramel and toffee. It soon gave way to a solid amount of bitterness. It was very citrussy, with rindy hop notes really jumping out at you. In spite of this, the caramel notes actually lingered nicely in the finish. Quite enjoyable all-in-all. Prosit!!
