Finding a broken record in your collection is never fun, so we brewed this beer to make things just a little bit better!

Both drinkable and complex, this Robust Porter has layers of malt flavour to create a balanced mix of dark chocolate and fresh ground coffee.

473 mL can from the LCBO; no canning date and served barely chilled.

Pours inky black brown with glints of crimson red when held to the light; it's topped with an inch of foamy, tan-coloured head that lasts for three minutes or so. Multiple blotches of lace cling to the glass afterwards, with a thin collar and a few patches of film residing upon the surface; looks fine so far. Enticing aroma of cocoa, milk chocolate and baker's chocolate; hints of roasted malts, dark fruits, caramel and just a whiff of pumpernickel.

It's a tasty porter - the marketing blurb uses the term 'robust', and I'd agree that it's leaning in that direction. I'm getting rye bread, caramel, milk chocolate and a light, creamy sweetness at the forefront. This is a stark contrast from the finish, which heavily features roasted malts, baker's chocolate and bitter coffee grounds. Roasty, earthy, bittersweet aftertaste that lingers on the tastebuds. Medium-full in body, with low carbonation that limply nudges against the palate; feels smooth and slippery on the tongue. Surprisingly drinkable for 6%; I wouldn't mind another serving.

Final Grade: 3.98, a B+. Broken Record is legitimately one of the better porters I've reviewed in recent memory, and one of my favourite Publican House brews to date. The rye contributions are very subtle, but they do add some nuance to this hearty, robust-tasting porter; I also appreciate the contrast between the chocolatey-sweet forefront and the roasty, bittersweet tail end. All in all, this is a darn good porter that I'd recommend to other BAs - I'll totally be seeking this out later this year, when the cool weather returns.

473ml can from the LCBO. Review from notes. Served cold into a pint glass.

Appearance - Dark brown, nearly black from the can and pours a good looking beer into the glass. Topped with a finger plus of light tan head that stays and leaves some spotty lacing.

Smell - Robust chocolate and roasted notes, with a caramel suggestion and dark fruits.

Taste - A touch bready with lots of roasted flavors, some dark chocolate and again the caramel shows through; just a bit.

Mouthfeel - Smooth and velvety, fairly low carbonation and a very pleasant sipper. Fairly full-bodied.

Overall - A very solid porter from a solid brewery. Well worth a try if you can find it as I believe this may be a limited run.

Only 1 other rating? Come on.
Anyways.. 3rd porter of the night. Not as good as the 1st...Way better than my 2nd (Founders) Shout out to Walkerville $12 Imperial Stout 9.5%................. and yes i'm still a noob at my age that thinks porter and stouts are the same.

Almost no foam head. Rich dark color. Give it a taste and.... Yeah its good. Could have more than 1 of these in a night, and i could buy more another time. Never seen these guys Publican House before, but this was at my LCBO in Barrie ON. I say decent job on the beer. Bit of a metal taste to it.. but hey, i know that's the metal can. I sit here wondering WHY, OH WHY most of these craft beer guys don't try to push the glass bottles instead of the metal cans (because you know, they try to put quality over quantity unlike the big guys) but this is another instance where i wish i poured this beer from a BOTTLE. Says they use Rye as well, so that's cool. Honestly i can't say i can tell a difference between barely and barely with mixed rye tastes like...................I'd be curious on a a Rye only beer if i come across one.
At 6% ABV and at a...... $3.60???? price i think its a solid deal. At least in 2025 it is.
As of today ( January 15th 2025). I STILL think Clifford Porter ranks among THE BEST porter/stout at 5-6% ABV you can get for $3.50 that i have tried. I'll continue to look for something to beat them. Woodhouse was kind of close. Broken Record, behind both of them but ahead of several others.

Glad i gave these guys a try, and i think you should too. If you see one, grab one.

Give this beer a try and see if you agree
