As some of you know, we love a bit of beer history, and we love to follow the seasons. We find ourselves drawn into the past through the stories told by beer and its ingredients. Today, for example, hops are harvested by machine, cleaned, dried and processed into pellets and vacuum packed into spacey Mylar bags. Back in the early 20th Century, however, migrant workers picked hops by hand. In Kent, this meant families leaving the slums of central London to pick hops for a few weeks each autumn in the Kentish countryside. The whole family worked, getting paid (not very much) by the bushel.
Well, we find this stuff very inspiring. So we thought about a beer that might have sustained these workers. It would have needed to be refreshing, plentiful, and probably contain whatever grain was available, plus local hops. In other words: a saison. An East Kent saison.
That’s what this beer is, and we hope you enjoy it. We used Whitbread Goldings as the hop, and pale malt, and this saison was fermented with an English ale yeast. But try to forget all that and close your eyes and imagine the poor families knackered after a days hard hop-picking, sitting round a fire outside the sheds that were provided for their accommodation, singing and carrying on and probably getting a bit plastered. That’s what this saison, brewed in their honor, is all about.
This beer is the first (and possibly only) release in a series of beers dedicated to Saint Arnoul of Soissons, the patron saint of hop pickers. From what we’ve read, our historical Kentish hop-pickers needed a Saint so it certainly feels correct to honor him in this way.

Served in my Grampus tulip (seemed apropos). Pours a lovely golden orange hue with a rocky, one inch, off-white head that dissipates into a creamy cap. Copious tiny bubbles are present effervescing in-soultion. Clarity is mostly translucent. Delicate bands of lacing are evident coating the walls of the glass during the tasting. Interesting nose; definitely a saison with an English twist - soft floral notes as well as a light grain bill; biscuit, spelt and perhaps a trace of caramel. Taste expresses noble hops and biscuit malts with a hint of something else somewhat akin to a skunk quality. Mouthfeel is light in body with a crisp carbonation and a semi-dry finish. Overall, an interesting beer that matches the description offered by the brewer. I'm going to miss these guys.

I definitely appreciate the history lesson this brew gives and the fact that it is an English style Saison. Served on draft at Sunset Grille, Allston, MA.
A- Draft pour into a pint glass. Foamy white cap builds to one finger high. Good retention and a huge sheet of lace left behind.
S- Crackery pale grains and pale caramel sweets. Earthy and spicy grassy hops balance that out with a hint of musty pale fruit.
T- Sweetness throughout. Herbal, spicy and grassy hops with a touch of berry. Cracker, bread, biscuit, pear ester.
MF- Frothy and extremely smooth silky light body. Medium carbonation is very smooth. Grassy light bitters.
Herbal grassy Goldings with a touch of cracker and pale fruit esters. The beer itself fits the story and description so some bonus points for that.

Poured from a bomber into a pint:
Appearance: bright straw-yellow color, with a thick, sudsy head. Kind of champagne-y looking in carbonation, color and head.
Aroma: lots of grassy, earthy notes. Smells slightly tart, but not overly so.
Taste: starts cracker and biscuit, a little bit of pilsner malt maybe? Middle is lightly tart, with some bitterness as well. Medium hop presence...not juicy or dank, mostly herbal/earthy. Finishes with a little bit of spice, and a very dry finish.
Feel: Crisp and carbonated, medium body.
Overall: a very good, straight forward saison. Definitely going to be bummed to see Pretty Things go.

A distinctive saison (without the random addition of outside ingredients) is hard to come by these days. Pretty Things--though I still miss their historical reconstructions--have put out a great new saison that I hope will have a presence on draught…going toe-to-toe with more bar friendly styles. Good stuff.

So glad to see a new beer from them, and a possible new series as well, excited. BOttled in October 2015, about a month old perhaps.
Pours a decent fizzy bubbly 1 finger head that fades at a med to slower pace, nice messy lacing, very clear golden honey pilsner color.
NOse brings grassy hops, grassy malts, herbal floral hops as well, with a little spicy herbal thing, with grainy toasty malts, straw grassy malts, little toasted cereal grain, light phenol spices, interesting mix of light dry saison notes and U.K. style herbal hops.
Taste starts with a creamy malt surprisingly, then quickly back into the toasty cereal, big grassy hay straw like malts, toasty all over, almost gristy straw stalk. Then big hops, not super bitter but def lets you know it's there, herbal earthy hops mostly, a little mossy earthy herbal, turns a little spicy later. Phenols lightly poke through, little spice note and peppery even. Finish is drier but sticky a bit, big bitterness as it ramps with more herbal earthy and spicy hops, grassy as well, with more straw gristy malts lingering.
Mouth is med bod, nice carbonation.
Overall interesting, the bitterness I would have thought would be a bit much, but seems to work well as the herbal earthy grassy hops blend nicely with the grassy gristy straw malts and saison characters, and bitterness kicks in at a nice point without being overly bitter, although nitpicking it I would say it does get a bit too bitter overall.
