I went back and forth about whether to post this review for some time. I ultimately decided it was the right thing to do, at least for educational purposes. And I think I was fair to it in my review. Reviewed in June 2011. This bottle is older than I am.
1975 vintage "La Trappe Amber" bottle acquired at the Kulminator bar in Antwerp for 15.00 euro and served into a La Trappe goblet. The label was faded and the bottle had some spiderwebs on it that needed brushing off. The old lady that works at Kulminator had to pull this one from the cellar for me and seemed pleased at the idea of getting it for me when I ordered it. Sometimes I wonder how big that cellar is...
6.5% per the label.
A: Pours a one finger head - very thin, devoid of any cream, and of great retention for the age and ABV (which has probably crept up over the years since its bottling). Colour is a semitransparent amber.
Sm: The first thing everyone at my table noticed when our beers were served was the overpowering strength of this beer's scent. Heavy alcohol is detectable along with dark fruit: cherry, raspberry, raisin, and other more subtle buried fermented dry fruits. Overpoweringly strong. I guess she's glad to be free from the cellar after 36 years.
T: Dark fruit esters, amber/caramel malts, and some watery vinegary notes towards the finish. The fruit is light and aged; almost fully fermented out I'd say. I think she's well past her peak. The fruit notes are nice; it's just the beer's past prime. A bit raisiny (maybe it started out grapey! anyone? anyone?)...
Full in flavour, but held back in terms of mouthfeel. The vinegar is also quite troublesome.
Mf: Sweet jaysus, she's rough. Undercarbonated, nearly flat. Smooth and a bit watery. Unnaturally thin. Quite horrible. Not at all complementary of the flavours.
Dr: This beer might have been great at its peak, which was probably ten years ago. But not it's old and withered. Time took its toll on the carbonation. If the mouthfeel weren't awful and the price high, it would have been great. I believe this is the oldest beer available at Kulminator, but it is certainly not the best.
My rating reflects the beer as I tasted it. I'm sure it was quite good in its prime.
