In reefer at Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA. $ 3.00 (Including tax)/16 oz can ($ 0.188/oz). Purchased 3/17/20 Undated can. Stored at home at 42 degrees and served at 50 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Reviewed 3/26/20.
Appearance – 3.
First pour – Deep amber – amber brown (SRM 15 - 18), clear.
Body – Deep brown (SRM 30), opaque. When held to direct light, no penetration..
Head – None, aggressive center pour, a one mm khaki crown fed by effervescence and a thin partial cap.
Lacing – None.
Aroma – 3.5 - Medium roasted malt, no hops, no yeastiness
Flavor – 3.5 Medium roasted malt, slightly sweet, no hops, no yeast. No alcohol (5.5 % ABV as marked on the label) taste or aroma. No diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide. Aftertaste is slightly sweet with a medium hang time.
Palate – 3 – Medium, watery, medium carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.25 (Lost 0.25 point for undated single-serving container.) A decent schwarzbier, highlighting the roasted malt sans bitterness usually associated with it. The absence of a head is distressing, probably a function of the wide-mouthed drink-from can. The price is reasonable, and the label is presentable.

16 oz can. Collaboration with Stoudts

Black in color, khaki colored head. Good head retention. Mild aroma of dark chocolate and a touch of roast. Similar flavor, starts a little sweet but fairly balanced overall. Easy drinking, medium bodied, smooth.

Overall a very solid schwarzbier, great sendoff for Stoudts

A well crafted black lager. Clean, smooth, and spot on for the style. Well done Sly Fox and Stoudts.

Black in color. Poured with a creamy, dark beige foam with medium low retention. Dark, sweet malt aromas with hint of graininess. Medium bodied with medium carbonation, a light smooth feel and a dry finish. Dark malty and light grainy flavors with a pleasant, mellow malty sweetness. Medium light, roasty bitterness followed by grainy and lightly burntvmalt flavors. Finished dryly with light roasty notes. Tasty and easy drinking with a dry, lightly roasty finish.

16 oz. can poured into a dimpled mug.

Pouring burnt caramel brown in color and stacking black and opaque in the mug I get a nice sweet aroma. The khaki head is about an inch, fizzy and very short lived. Flavor is slightly bitter roast with a quick shot of malty caramel but otherwise dry and fairly clean. Smooth and medium bodied with light medium carbonation that seems a bit too light.
Nice but a bit dull. I feel like the weak carbonation (of my four pack) may be the culprit.

Given the lack of reviews, I feel obligated to provide my input.

This was the first schwarzbier I have had, mind you, so keep that in mind.

Looks black. Head is present and persists for just enough time to impress. Lacing is evident.

A chocolatey malt aroma dominates, which prepared my mind for something like a stout.

A light bitterness helps balance the dark malts, with a pleasant coffee/chocolatey aftertaste.

This beer feels incredible. It has the taste of something like a porter or stout, but the feel of a pilsner. Both satisfying and refreshing.

Overall-I really enjoyed this brew and will be keeping an eye our for more schwarzbiers!

Pours near black with two fat fingers of light mocha foam. Great retention and even better lacing.

Crisp smelling with some roasted malts, coffee and a light hint of chocolate syrup.

A little weaker flavor than the nose let on. A mix of semi-sweet, semi-roasty flavors and more a lingering, corny lager finish than a crisp one.

Medium bodied, lightly creamy with zippy carbonation.

Solid, drinkable beer that’s quite possibly my last new beer from Stoudts. :(
