A: Gripping can art, although I think velociraptors are as overplayed as zombies. Black body, brown velvety voluminous lasting head that sticks to the glass. No corners cut here!
S: Chocolate and pine. Slightly soapy perfume.
T: Rich dark chocolate that rivals great stouts, piney hops weaving in and out. Bitter.
M: As rich and smooth as that head is, the body is pretty light, halfhearted carbonation.
O: This is great, and I don't even like this style! The malt flavor was excellent, and the hops worked well with it. Thicken up that body just a bit and we'd have a really incredible thing going on here.

Very thin smelled great but not a fan. Aviator is struggling to make it happen in the NC beer market Not a fan of this brewery. I've had much better home brew

Really promising aroma but a thin body and lacking flavor are a letdown. Kind of oddly thin and quite bitter.

Aviator Cretaceous Black IPA
16 oz. can, no apparent freshness dating
$3.49 @ Total Wine & More #901, Tampa, FL
Appearance: Opaque brown-black body even when held to the light. Short head of creamy dark tan holds well and leaves nice lace.
Aroma: Surprisingly limited regarding hops. Chocolatey malt comes through clearly, backed by light pine, some mild citrus pith, and damp underbrush.
Flavor: Similar to the aroma the malt dominates, accented by hops, combining bittersweet chocolate with pine/spruce and background citrus. Solid bitterness. The alcohol never shows, but at just 5.3% it doesn't even meet the guidelines for an American IPA. Pleasant, lingering finish with pine notes emerging amidst a dry woodiness.
Mouthfeel: Medium-light in body with a delicate crispness from a very fine-bubbled moderate carbonation. Smooth. Perfect for the flavor profile.
Overall: Hardly what I'd call a "black IPA", but an interesting and enjoyable beer in itself. It's dark, that's for sure, and roasty. The hops act as accent, and then both components work with the woodiness of the finish. Kind of like a dry Irish stout with Chinook hops added.
