A burst of citrus here... a grounding of malt there... Aviator's "whim" of a beer celebrates all-things-North Carolina with homegrown barley to release a rich caramel and crusted taste that sides ever so slightly towards the hearty soul of beer- the grains. Better explained, here's an excerpt from the brewery:
"HighVoltage Pale Ale is brewed with North Carolina 6-row barley grown in the Piedmont and malted in Asheville by the folks at Riverbend Malting. This high quality grain comprises the base malt for this beer. We use generous amounts of Columbus and Cascade hops for flavor and bittering. We add another few pounds of Cascade hops for dry hopping for further hop flavor. Support Local Support NC....drink HighVoltage Pale Ale."
And that richness of malt is captured first in the appearance- its rich copper color is cast in a haze of unfiltered hops and is capped by a frothy off-white blanket of foam. Long lasting in its retention, the ale laces with broken rings with each sip taken. Its a classy yet rich American Pale Ale appearance.
Strongly aromatic with rich toffee, caramel, and fresh kilned barley; the aromas are bready yet balanced with hops. Its those hops that give a kick of grapefruity citrus and soft pine to offset the sweeter scents. And to taste, the flavors tilt lightly toward the sweeter malt side rather than the sharper hop side- making it friendly for those who prefer the more mild mannered Amber Ales. Its toffee-sweetened upstart is prominent on the initial taste and extends boldly through the middle palate. A late turn to hop balance results in the citrus rind taste of grapefruit and oranges but with a soft herbal-grassy mix in its late and smooth bitterness.
Medium bodied, the sweetness keeps the beer feeling firmer and richer on the tongue. Again the bread and sugar textures linger late in the taste until a late charge of both hop dryness and alcohol warmth aid in the crisp and refreshing finish that's almost too late.
The HighVoltage Pale Ale is has got to be the perfect beer for those with prefer a maltier American Pale Ale or an American Amber Ale with a little more pep from hops. Its fresh malt taste is evident and almost begs to be used in English Ale.
