I had a beer (this beer?) on tap at the Lehigh Valley Airport. The tap was labelled Old Forge Ol' Smithy. No info about spices and to be honest, this beer did not seem spiced to me. All the other reviews are from 2009. The Old Forge website doesn't say anything about having Ol' Smithy on tap right now. Perhaps this is a rebrew of the 2009 warmer without the spices? In any event, it was not a good beer...
A = dark red to black in color with nice foam.
S= caramel (uh oh) and slight mintyness, possibly coming from a hop? That's the only trace of spice character in here and the other reviews say cinnamon, which makes me think this isn't the same beer, just the same name.
T= Sweet sweet sweet sweet sweet sweet. As in utterly cloying.
M = Thick, chewy, syrupy.
O= Too sweet and too full bodied. Although I wasn't expecting a winter warmer when I ordered the beer, and it's June now, I wouldn't want to ever finish this beer. I asked them to pour me a different beer.

A-Hazy reddish tinted copper with a thin off-white head that reduced and left no lace whatsoever.
S-Quite floral and spicy with notes of Christmas time aromas of brown sugar, cinnamon, clove and nutmeg. Upon warming a perfume like cachet aroma builds.
T-Big time spiciness, such as those described in the aroma. Spices are a bit dominate and out of balance lying over top a bed of sweet caramel malt.
M-Medium bodied with a nice luscious feel and LONG lasting
D-A decent first attempt at a winter brew. Spice level is a bit strong and with a little fine tuning this could become very nice. It actually improved with warming as the floral/perfume notes became more prevalent and the spicy notes toned down some.

On tap at Old Forge on 2/7/09.

S - Mild spicy nose with hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and brown sugar. Malt is sweet and caramely.
T - Warm and tingly with plenty of spiciness suggesting cinnamon, brown sugar, nutmeg and hints of ginger. Spices are balanced by a sweet malt character featuring caramel and toffee notes.
M - Light to medium bodied with a syrupy texture and moderate carbonation. Finishes with a mild hop bitterness on the palate, though the mouthfeel is rather spicy overall.
D - Pretty good winter ale with a spicy profile. While this could benefit from a thicker body and a bit more malt, the spices were nicely balanced and implemented in this ale.
