On Tap at Blue Dog.

Hank the Belgian Stout looks like a stout, it's a very dark black beer with a small amount of tannish/mocha colored foam on top. It eventually died leaving no stick and just a black liquid. Smell is chocolate up front with some faint dark fruit, plum action. Not picking up any bourbon or any barrel for that matter. The menu says this was barrel aged, not sure if the kegs got switched up. more smell reveals cocco, a hint of vanilla and roasted malt. Taste and smell wise this is more of a stout than a BSDA, not sure why it's listed as such. I get a nice cocco/chocolate/tootsie roll taste up front with a middle of vanilla and some very faint Belgian yeast popping through with warming. Body is at about medium, carb is light, the ride is smooth. All together, another stout.

This poured out as a nice black color with a thin tan colore head. The smell of roasted malts and Belgian yeast on the nose. The taste of the beer has a subtle chocolate flavor with some dark fruit flavors in there too. The aftertaste is bitter and dry. The mouthfeel is smooth a little creamy too. Overall this beer was pretty good.

On-tap

An ink black body sits with a thin mocha colored cap. The cap receded to a collar of foam, with some clingy spider web lacing. The nose is of dark chocolate, faint whiskey, mild roast, oak, vanilla, and a bold fruity/phenolic influence from the Belgian yeast strain. Hank just slides onto the palate with an excellent mouthfeel. Lush and creamy. Flavors of dark Belgian chocolate and bitter roast up front before a rush of vanilla beans and fruit/phenols from the Belgian yeast strain. The finish is more bitter roast, whiskey, and a mild sweetness of vanilla and some oak to dry things out. The 11.5% abv is hardly noticeable. This is a damn fine Belgian Stout with a tremendous mouthfeel. I hope they decide to make this one again.
