First had: on cask at Bainbridge Barrel House, Philly, PA
Poured a dark brown-black with a foamy, uneven, dark brown head that dissipated to a collar. Served slightly above room temperature. Aroma of dark roasty malts, chocolate, cream, with a slight vegetal presence, though nothing distinctively peppery. As opposed to many chili-spiced beers I've experienced, where the pepper heat comes in near the end, the heat appeared fairly early on the palate in this beer. The taste reflected the nose mostly, as far as maltiness goes, dark and roasty, chewy milk chocolate, with a creamy lactose sweetness; after a second or two, there was a significant amount of pepper heat from the pablanos and habaneros, but it didn't clash and it wasn't overdone. Overall, I'd say a nicely balanced flavor profile. The burn and vegetal presence lingered fairly long in the aftertaste. Body was nearly full, enhanced, I think, by the cask serving. Quite a good offering from Old Forge.
