Checking in yet again at my local stop on the C&O - I find today a coffee stout from upstate New York's Lake Placid Brewing. Bean-To as it goes, was a cool find at a store while on a trip to the area last summer, and I've finally gotten around to trying it. This is my first run-in with Lake Placid, and it wasn't bad. I had high hopes for this beer, so I was a tad letdown when the beer came across as a little overcarbonated and dry. I attribute this to the time from bottle date, which was around a year by the time I tried it. This beer fresh from the tap is likely much better - nonetheless, it had some goo traits that did a decent job saving its score. Read more at http://wp.me/p7cNHR-8b

I tried this from the bottle chilled in a snifter

The color is black with opaque clarity and light tan head with fine bead, spots of lace stick with good head retention. The smell has a coffee aroma with some spice in aroma like cinnamon with slight yeast fruitiness which hints at raisin. the smell leads to medium roast texture with moderately high carbonation and slight spiced element with mild alcohol and mostly dry finish sweetness is mild.

The taste is decent with roasty and slightly earthen flavor with some gentle dried fruit flavor and perhaps molasses with a mild toast and slight coffee bean acidic element with malt and bean cohesion very dry in the finish with a light taste of alcohol and mild anise element. This is a pretty tasty stout better than most but the coffee is a little dry/spicy and distracts with mineral quality which could be yeast derived-could have more body if I am going to nitpick but worth a try

This beer pours an almost black coca cola color with a half inch mocha head. Retention is minimal as well as lacing. Smell is coffee, chocolate and roasted malts. Taste is similar, but very muddled. Feel is light and watery. Overall not a very good beer. Would not buy again.

From a 12 oz bottle, pours a stout black with 2 fingers of dense tan head. Nice lacing. The look of this beer is excellent, and its best quality.

Smell is the next best part of this beer, primarily coffee and roasted malts, but also some chocolate and dark dried fruits. Unfortunately there's just a little too much ester (veers into acetone) that detracts.

Flavor is mostly coffee and roasted malts, though the acetone makes more of an appearance to the taste's detriment. Nice lingering coffee aftertaste with a bit of bitterness. Feel is thin-ish and at odds with the bold flavors.

Overall a decent coffee stout, though the acetone issues would keep me from seeking out again.

Very well-balanced coffee and stout flavors are forefront in this beer, though neither dominates on the palate though the beer definitely improves and loses some of its bitterness as it warms.
