Backfence IPA is a wet-hopped India Pale Ale. Wet hopping is a unique way of creating hop flavor, where freshly picked whole hop cones are added to the beer, rather than using the usual dried version of hops. Fresh “wet” hops must be used within a day of harvest as they would begin to grow mold if left undried for much longer. Our wet hops are Cascade hops, locally grown in Lake Placid by a loyal customer who donates his entire crop to be used in this one batch of beer. The beer is aptly named Backfence IPA, as the hops literally grow up and along his back fence. This beer is slightly more bitter than our LP IPA, and has a bold unique hop flavor. It is only available in late September, as it is brewed in conjunction with the harvesting of the hops.

A nice dark colored ipa. This has a solid puffy head of foam and slowly reduces to a sticky white lace which clings to the side of the glass. The aroma is quite piny, but true to the style. It
Seems to be a rather drinkable brew, but a bit too high in alcohol to be a Sade session beer.

A nice hazy dark amber with a big chewy white head and great lacing. The aroma is a musty ocean spray of pine hops and chewy toffee malt. The flavor brings a decided piney malt hop blend with a slight grassy edge. Nice bitterness but a mellow, smooth feel in a mid-bodied brew. It's refreshing with very fine and subtle carbonation, easy drinking, a very decent IPA for any occasion.

a-Deep reddish brown colour with a long lasting head.
s-Very heavy with grapefruit hops.
t-Nice and hoppy with a slight maltiness to round it out. Falls somewhere in the middle of least hoppy to most hoppy IPAs.
m-Heavier as one would expect of a solid IPA and one with a 7% abv as well
d-very drinkable...almost dangerously so.

Enjoyed in a pint glass. I had this on tap at the brewery and enjoyed it so much I bought a growler. This is a delicious wet-hop ale and with all local NY hops! I remember it being in the range of 6.5-7% ABV, but I can't remember for sure so I left it off.
A: Aggressive pour yields 3 fingers of thick off-white head. Froth sticks around. Bronzey color is pretty.
S: Floral and piney and citrus hops. Slight dark malt underneath. Well balanced for a west coast hop forward IPA all the way!
T: Malt to start and hops to finish. Balanced but leans toward the hop. Great cascade hop flavor. A little off flavor in the finish maybe. Much more bitter than any other fresh hop IPA I've had.
M: Syrupy/oily. Bitter but not bracing.
D: Alcohol is only thing preventing it from being perfectly drinkable. It is solid and delicious.
