Appearance: Pours out flat, with a burnt orange tinted amber color; leaves some dots of lacing on the side

Smell: Nostril-tingling acidity, with lemon and green apple tones; leathery and oaky, as well

Taste: The acidity of this beer overwhelms the palate from start to finish; there are some lactic qualities that linger but the primary character is acetic, with the barrel tones really building as the beer warms; very lemony, with a hint of green apple

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied but flat

Overall: Picked up at La Cave à Bulles a few years ago when pixieskid was working there, this beer is a fine geuze that just needs more carbonation; without the carbonation, it edges into overwhelming sourness

750ml bottle into a snifter. Thanks to Christer at RBWG Asheville.

Pours a light reddish brown with a slight head that quickly dissipates. The smell is massively acidic and sour... a lot going on in the nose. The taste is out of this world mouth puckeringly sour. Lemon, funk, vinegar, very acidic. Tons going on and definitely a unique flavored gueuze. Medium in body and mild in carbonation, just mouth puckeringly sour and straight up awesome.

Definitely a beer i will never be able to find again. Glad to have tried this gem.

750ml (crazy-shaped) bottle into a Weyerbacher tulip. Major thanks go out to jedwards for generously sharing this at CdC.

A: Hazy gold body with just a few stray bubbles. Boring.

S: Insanity. Incredibly acidic, with cheesy apple cider funkiness dominating. Somewhat spiritous (Calvados?), very strange. I kind of like it, and I kind of fear it.

T: Even more sour and strange, though at least I was prepared for it based on the odor. Tons of lactic acid, some cidery mustiness, pure mustard, and just straight lemony sourness. Very tasty, very intense, kind of confusing.

M: Smooth medium body. Still. Pretty nice.

O: What a weird beer. Apparently it's made from Cantillon dregs, but other than the hints of mustardseed it didn't remind me of that brewery's beers at all. The apple cider notes were fascinating, and the sourness was nothing short of face-melting. I don't know if I could survive a whole bottle, but I'd love to try someday.

Pucker up!

Poured out a hazy golden color with a little bit of soapy looking bubbles. This beer sat lifeless with very minimal carbonation in the glass.

The smell was strange. It took me a while to figure it out and I realized the heavy influence of oak had twisted a little with the funk and sourness in the beer making a very unique aroma. Essence of leather, honey, and vanilla peaked through.

Extreme sourness assaults your tongue. It tingles and burns around my lips. Hints of lemon zest and stone fruits are dominated by strong acidity. Finish is rounded out by the oak and ends fairly dry, it doesn't linger for that long. This beer teeters on that line of drinkable and undrinkable that some sours venture past with unquaffable vinegar qualities (batch 1 Experimental Raspberry anyone?). Not sure if I could drink a whole 750 but you can live through a couple pours of it. Nevertheless, I did go back for a second pour of this one cause I was feeling a little audacious at the time.

Picked this up in Paris at Cave a' Bulles. Numbered bottle 125 of 352.

Appearance: Upon pouring a water slightly offwhite quarter finger head that disappeared within seconds. Was flat very quickly. Reddish amber cloudy colour

Smell: sharply acid smell, hints of oak and a little sweet red wine. Not the strongest aroma but pleasant

Taste: Wonderfully sour. One of the most sour guezes I have had. Salty acidic taste, but very drinkable with a real pucker to the finish. Amazing taste which I like alot.

Mouthfeel: A bit of body to the mouthfeel. Really would have been better with a bit higher carbonation.

Overall: I liked this alot. With better carbonation this would have been a stellar beer, but the taste was awesome. One of the best guezes I have had.

The bottle said 24 months in some sort of red wine barrel (my french is bad) with Cuvee 2011 on the label on the neck of the bottle

Yellow with a red/pink tint to it. Almost totally flat. Almost no carbonation despite my attempts at a strong pour. Very simular to a traditional still lambic.

Very intense sour flavors upfront. Wow. It reminded me immediately of some of the Hanneses lambics I have tried. Biting sour and funky. Horseblanket and vinegar. You can also taste the tanins from the wine barrel used to age this one. I would also assume this is where the beer got the rose color in the body of the beer.

As it warmed up a but in the glass the acidity balanced out quite nicely. Green apples and pears became present on the nose and although it was still intensely sour when at room temperature the beer was not burning the back of my throat as much.

I was excited to try this beer but to be honest I don't know much about it. Over all a good attempt at Gueuze. It was also interesting to try this style of beer aged in a red wine barrel for so long (2 years). I kept coming back to how much this tasted like a Hannsen's experiemental beer. Same over the to bracingly sour flavor. Good but not great. Especially compared to some the easier drinking and easier to get world class examples of this style.
