Mystery Beer #2 from @muchloveforhops3 in BSBIF #1. Waxed and capped bomber. Reviewed 03/12/23 (Review 3185). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Stored at 34 degrees at home. Served at 55.5 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 58.6 degrees F.
Appearance – 4.
First pour – Straw (SRM 3), clear.
Body – Gold (SRM 5), clear. Under direct light, same. When rear-lite, same.
Head: Average (Maximum 2.0 cm, aggressive center pour), white, high density, fizzy, quickly dropping to a 0.3 cm crown and a thin partial cap.
Lacing – Fair. A mesa of tiny bubbles rises above the crown’s horizon.
Aroma – 4.25 – Sweet, caramelly, and a bit of oak. No hops, no yeast, no alcohol (8.2 % ABV as stated on the bottle).
Flavor – 4 – Begins slightly sweet and caramel but not sticky. No yeast, no hops. The oakiness from the nose does not translate to flavor. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Moderate gastric warming.
Palate – 4 – Full; creamy; soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4.25 One of the few “white stouts” to have crossed my palate. The caramel is noted, and the whiskey barrel floats by, leaving only a ghost of oak and no detectable whiskey. The vanilla is too weak for my burnt-out taste buds. Still, this is a good example of the style.
