Enjoyed on tap at Liberty Street Brewery. According to them, this is their Starkweather Stout "finished" with blueberries and vanilla. Not sure exactly what "finished" means. It's a deep black color with mahogany and ruby tints shining through only at the very edges of the glass. The fine-bubbled, tan head has decent retention and leaves some good, thick lacing along the side of the glass. Pretty nice looking overall.

The heaviest component of the aroma was the vanilla - silky smooth and mildly sweet. The blueberries added a solid juiciness; deep, fruity, and inviting. Really impressive combination of vanilla and blueberry. From the first smell, it seems like they have the proportions just right.

The blueberries have a nice pureness to them, avoiding the concentrated and "artificial" aroma that sometimes plagues these types of beer. Some light, roasted malts reside in the background with a very, very mild cocoa and coffee bean aroma. The vanilla and blueberry are definitely the stars of this show.

The taste begins with a hefty dose of roasted malt and lightly burnt coffee beans. Before long, the blueberry comes rushing in; one again, very fortified and juicy, almost like a very mild puree. The vanilla is more mild than it was in the aroma, but it remains calming, smooth, and sweet - a perfect accessory to the other flavors going on here.

Hops make a small appearance on the back end - ashy and herbal mostly. The finish also contains a slight tartness from the blueberry with a mildly astringent bitterness from the roast. More and more, I'm picking up a cola flavor in the finish as well. Smooth mouth feel with a moderate amount of carbonation, maybe a little thinner than I would expect a stout to be.

Pretty impressive overall. I think I enjoyed this one a bit more than the original Starkweather Stout. Good mix of vanilla and blueberry without going overboard. Some slight refinement here and there would do this beer good, but I have no huge complaints. Easy drinking for a stout, and the low ABV tag is nice.
