On-tap 2/17/2012 at British Beer Company, in Walpole, MA listed as “Comet Tail Anniversary Ale” and served in a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a murky golden brown color with a thin white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains floral hops, caramelized malts and some citrus.

T: The taste starts out with a caramel and citrus sweetness that is quickly followed by an odd bite of hops bitterness that takes a few sips to get used to. The malt character is hearty but not too heavy. The beer gains some balance as it sits for a bit. The after-taste is slightly hoppy and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is dry and slightly sticky.

O: A little tasty, goes down ok, not too filling, mild kick, decent representation of style, it’s not a bad beer but there are other beers in the style that I would chose first.

Blue Hills Brewery has brewed an ESB as their anniversary release. Info says it will only be available for now in kegs and growlers, so I picked up a growler at the brewery. Poured into a standard pint glass. Bright orange-yellow color. Nice looking white head forms. Plenty of carbonation. Smell was hoppy and a bit musty. The taste was really bursting with hops. It's brewed with five different hops, according to info posted at the brewery. Very light body with just a hint of sweet malt at the end. This is probably one of the hoppiest ESBs I have ever had, which is a nice twist on the style for American drinkers. Very easy to drink with a relatively low abv of 5.6% plus plenty of hops to boot, this beer will satisfy those hop heads out there and also the session beer drinkers alike.
