Brewed by:
The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery
North Carolina, United States

Style: Hefeweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.40%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
At OMB, we love our local history almost as much as we enjoy brewing our premium local beer. While most people think Hornet’s Nest is an ode to Charlotte’s basketball team, it’s actually the nickname England’s General Cornwallis gave Charlotte when he met more resistance here than anticipated during the Revolutionary War. So why did we choose this opaque, subtly sweet Hefeweizen as Charlotte’s tribute beer? Because it’s awesome! Otherwise, it wouldn’t be much of a tribute.

Served at OMB, in a tall Heffeweizen glass. Murky yellow with medium carbonation. A bit less carbonated and more creamy mouthfeel than I typically see in the style. Flavor is much more bubblegum than banana or clove. Pretty easy drinking, lots of nice wheat flavor as well. Overall a good enough beer if not really notable for any particular reason.

Tried on draft at the brewery. Smell was a little... off. Didn't change the taste though, and it's a wonderful Hefe. Very authentic, and reminded me of my time in Germany!

Great to see this one available in 12-oz bottles just in time for summer. This is another example of OMB doing a nice job with a traditional German style

A: Pours a very cloudy medium yellow in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation along the edges of the glass and faint golden yellow highlights. The beer has a two finger tall dense foamy bright white head that slowly reduces to a very thick layer covering the entire surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of banana, clove, and lemon citrus over the top of lighter aromas of wheat.

T: Upfront there are light to moderate flavors of wheat and toasted wheat malts. That is followed by moderate flavors of banana, clove, and lemon citrus. Light amounts of spicy yeast and hops towards the finish. Minimal amounts of bitterness are present and fade quickly.

M: Medium bodied with a moderate to heavy amount of carbonation. Crisp.

O: A very enjoyable and easy to drink hefeweizen, another very nice beer from Olde Meck. Definitely worth grabbing as this one will be great for the summer.

Poured on-tap at the brewery and served in a Weiss vase, the beer is an opaque, hazy, pale yellow coloring with a filmy, clingy, tall white head. Nose of banana, lemon, and hints of clove. Flavors are banana crème forward, with subtle spices, and toasty highlights. Smooth, creamy body. The aftertaste is roast and spice, with banana rich throughout. Smooth, sweet, clean finish. Solid brew.

At the taproom. Bright straw yellow and gold. Finger of white. Stuck tithe glass a bit.

Aroma, very grainy, some clove. Minimal bannan which I prefer.

Taste, a grainy wheaty malt, very light sweetness. Nicely spiced similar to bannana bread. Maybe a little citrus zest. Not just bubblegum and bannana like most poor American versions.

Crisp and refreshing. Carbonation is spot on, drinks very easy. A must for anyone who likes a good low hop German Hefe.
A style I would expect Old Meck to nail and I believe they did.
