Style: German Hefeweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.40%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
At OMB, we love our local history almost as much as we enjoy brewing our premium local beer. While most people think Hornet’s Nest is an ode to Charlotte’s basketball team, it’s actually the nickname England’s General Cornwallis gave Charlotte when he met more resistance here than anticipated during the Revolutionary War. So why did we choose this opaque, subtly sweet Hefeweizen as Charlotte’s tribute beer? Because it’s awesome! Otherwise, it wouldn’t be much of a tribute.

Beer reports from the bottle with a hazy golden color. There was initially has a large, white, foamy head which settles to approximately half a finger of dense white foam. The beer is a very light golden color, hazy appearance. Initially it seems to have a sour smell/aroma but the taste is light and does not have a sour flavor at all. Typical German Hefeweizen taste. A little light for my taste but is smooth and refreshing, especially on a hot summer day. I prefer darker beers but this is a well-made Hefeweizen beer from a brewery in Charlotte North Carolina which adheres to “old” German receives and brewing standards.

Hazy golden color with white cap and good lacing.

Aroma of mild but sweet malt with a delightful mix of floral, spicy scents. I can't describe the spice other than it strikes me as more nutmeg than clove with some luscious ripe yellow fruit.

My first impression on taste was this is remarkably smooth. An overused term but appropriate here. My overall impression is the spiciness and ripe fruit are more prominent than in the scent yet the flavors carry a sense of beeriness rather than some tarted up fru-fru wheat brew. The spice and fruit are proportionate to the malt but they build as the malt recedes finishing with a burst of flavors that harmonize well together.

Medium texture with balancing carbonation. There is a glass filling amount of head at first yet once it settles the bubble influence feels normal.

This is well crafted and a delight to drink.

Tried a tall one at the Charlotte, NC airport waiting on my flight. I tried it becated the Bros gave it a 91. Now I'm not big on wheat beers but this one was pretty good. However I'll stick with my IPAs.

Review from BA Mag Issue #119 ( Dec 2016 )

Bread, Spice, Gummy, Fruity
I immediately noticed this brew was on the right path; the massive head was a good sign, and I made sure to swirl the yeast into the beer to give it that authentic haziness. Hornet’s Nest smells of banana peels, bubblegum, mild clove, pears, bready malt, and a nutty yeast. Its smoothness reaches levels most beers don’t even come close to, and a quick snap of crispness leads to a semi-dry, malty palate. A hint of banana taffy, clove, bread crust, and fruity esters is exactly what I look for in this style. Job well done! [Jason]

12 oz bottle from 5/?/17 poured into a hefe glass. Golden orange/yellow, somewhat cloudy, with a two finger white head that dissapates to a thin lace quickly. Aroma is pale malt, banana, and clove. The taste follows suit, with banana, clove, and mild hints of bubblegum. Carbonation and feel are medium, balancing back and forth from creamy to slightly sharp. Overall, a tasty, well made, recommended hefe.

Served at OMB, in a tall Heffeweizen glass. Murky yellow with medium carbonation. A bit less carbonated and more creamy mouthfeel than I typically see in the style. Flavor is much more bubblegum than banana or clove. Pretty easy drinking, lots of nice wheat flavor as well. Overall a good enough beer if not really notable for any particular reason.
