Anderson Valley Brewing Co. "Cherry Gose"
12 fl. oz. can; coding is illegible
$2.33 @ Wegmans, King of Prussia, PA
Notes via stream of consciousness: On a hot day after working in the sun I need something to quench my thirst and help cool me down. It's poured a hazy pinkish body beneath a thumb's width of white foam. The aroma has a little bit of cherry to it which is nice, and some minor mineralish character. The taste follows. It's very lightly sweet, lightly tart, lightly salty, and fruity with clear cherry flavor. That cherry is, of course, partially due to "NATURAL FLAVOR" but it comes off as authentic. It's nicely balanced and quite refreshing. In the mouth it's light-medium in body, and zesty with carbonation. Could it be better? Yes, but as it is it's not bad.

A: A pinkish hue to the pour show up pink grapefruit in the vessel. Light ghost hazing with a steady flow of carbonation bubbles. The capping was quickly diminishing, fizzy, and laid bare surface almost instantly. The coloring was pastel like, with a soft glow from backlighting, and was quite interesting.
S: Sweet cherry juice, yeasty, with a musky grain base. Some apple-plum fruitiness and lightly dried banana bread.
T: The flavor was strong cherry, fruity and almost smoothie like sourness. Perhaps some apple-plum yeastiness, bubblegum and again light mention of banana bread-malting. Its basically all about the cherries here with a smooth and light sour factor.
M: The carbonation was light, back ground ambience, with a slightly sticky texture and sour twang off the tongue. A medium build all around.
O: Over all a kettle sourness, focusing on the cherry aspect, not a lot of complexity, but basic affair for a hot day that keeps things light and fruity.

Poured from a 12 oz can into a tasting glass showed off the beautiful cloudy pinkish golden brew with a thick white head, the aroma was salt and cherries. The head died fast but the flavor was a wonderful mix of salt and fresh sour cherries, with the light mouthfeel the tartness was very smooth and with cherry and went to the sour at the end. A very drinkable beer that I would gladly pick up again, I do feel drinking it from a glass is a must to enjoy it to the fullest

From the bottom of the can: "211 831" followed by a series of dots
Appearance: The body is an orange-brown color with a slight pinkish hue. It has a hazy appearance. The head is short and white. No real lacing but average retention.
Aroma: It smells like cherry lip balm.
Taste: Sour and tart cherry flavors up front, which follows through to the middle of the palate. A bit of a mineral flavor in the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Light and refreshing. Good carbonation. No bitterness but a light tartness which keeps things interesting.
Overall: The can states that this is a "CHERRY GOSE BEER WITH NATURAL FLAVOR ADDED" and it does have a mild but noticeable cherry character. The beer is very refreshing and enjoyable to drink. I wouldn't drink this beer too often but I would definitely pick it up again if I were putting together a mix-a-six to take to the beach or on a camping trip. I would recommend it to those who like cherry flavored beers.

12 fl oz can:
4.2% ABV. "Cherry Gose." "Beer with natural flavor added."
BODY: Clear copper with a pinkish hue.'
HEAD: Pinkish white. ~4cm in height. ~4 minute head retention.
AROMA: Vaguely artificial cherry (like cherry juice or canned puree or something - not medicinal cherry or cloyingly sweet cherry extract or anything like that). 2-row. A kiss of salt. Not getting any overt coriander or other spice/herb. Doesn't seem sour at all, which is a drawback given the intended style...
TASTE: More sour and tangy than the aroma suggested, weighing in at about a 3-4 out of 10 in terms of sourness which is just right for a gose. The requisite salt is there but not overdone. Not getting any coriander.
Thin cherry juice is present but doesn't add much or "pop" in the flavour profile. Anderson Valley has done far more impressive fruitsy/fruited gosenbiere before.
TEXTURE: Refreshingly tangy and spritzy with a twangy sour feel on the palate that pleasantly zaps a bit. Smooth, wet, light-bodied. I do want a tartness to accentuate the cherryish flavours that never comes. Well carbonated.
Not oily, gushed, astringent, harsh, rough, or scratchy. Has no overt faults.
OVERALL: Not so much a cherry gose as like a cherry water gose...the cherry flavour is thin and weak, lacking any concomitant tartness. This ain't your montmorency sour ale, but it's affordable for what it is. Still, Anderson Valley basically dominates the fruitsy gose space (along with Westbrook) as far as I'm concerned, and viewed through that lens this beer is a decidedly minor effort. Damned drinkable though, and a better gose than many American breweries are capable of.

12 ounce can poured into a Duvel tulip glass.

T---Same as the nose. Tart with sour cherries.
F---Medium/light body. Ample carbonation. There's a definite sour pucker to it.
O---A nice one. Not awesome, but absolutely solid.

Tart and salty like a gose should be, with a bit of sweetness from the cherry. Those same cherries do add some more tartness, so you might be a little turned off by that if you don't like that flavor. But that's appropriate for this style, so I'm fine with it. Interesting faint red color as well, so you know the cherries are in there. Nice beer, and I'd try more of their stuff.
