Looks like we have a possibly unintentionally soured beer that got the final spot (#48) at the Toronado Barleywine festival (2010). Can imagine a "ah F it, let's bring it and get rid of it on obliterated palates at a barleywine festival" kind of last minute decision. Came in that dark burnt copper auburn color similar to my truck. Beige head 1/5" deep. Aroma is one of the more unique ones for a barleywine, instead of hops or malt, you get a tart cherry and plum kind of feel for it first. A little bit of bitter caramel comes after that.
Taste, whoa, the tartness wasn't something I was prepared for at a barleywine festival. Unintended consequence, it did provide some levity (much lighter than your average barleywine) and work as a nice little palate reset compared to all the other beers there. A bit more acetic acid you would want in any beer, even a flanders, but I guess a bigger body helps dilute that aspect of the beer. I'd be interested to try this with a blend of fresh non infected beer with it, the tartness would be nice if a little more restrained. Glad they didn't just dump it, revelations were made.

Poured up at the 2010 Toronado Barleywine Festival with deep copper body and tan head. It has a vinegary, sweet garden salad, buttered bread sort of aroma to go along with forehead sweat and funky body odor sourness. Interesting to say the least. The taste is modestly sour growing into a dryness into the finish with red wine grapes. I get notes like cherries mixing with a moderate level of slushy aged sweet malts leading into a dry and crisp finish. At first I didn't think I was going to like this but after a few ounces I'm really starting to enjoy it. Refreshing.

Had on tap at Anderson Valley Brew Co.
Very big surprise here. A bunch of flavors all stopping in to say hi. Starts off with a nice sour note reminscent of greek yogurt. Moves on to a malty, caramel flavor. Body is surprisingly light (not in a bad way), for a BW. Next is the barrels. Delicious oak.
Not something I would buy a lot of, but it was also so damn interesting I couldn't put it down.

On tap at Toronado for Barleywine Fest 2010.
Pours clear reddish-amber in color with a lasting off-white head and great lacing.
Aroma is fairly tart with cherries and other fruity notes, caramel, and vinegar.
Flavor is really interesting. Not great, but good, and different. Lots of sour cherries, spice, caramel, toffee, and lots of vinegar.
Medium body for the style with mild acidity - not near the level of a sour ale but a lot for a barleywine.
Drinkability is pretty good, although the tart vinegary aspect gets to be a bit much after awhile. Crazy beer overall.
