A- clear burnt goods with a quickly dissipating white head and zero lacing

S- somewhat fruity with a hint of peppery spice. Very fresh grains, as expected.

T- mild but thorough phenolic and hoppy notes of bandaid and bubblegum with a floral hop edge. Sweet and slightly spicy

MF- zestfully carbonated with medium heft and moderate dryness

D- nice sitting here at the brewery. It's an ok American version.

Pours a clear golden color with white head. Aroma of peppery yeast, clove and grassy notes. In the taste, earthy, grainy and a bit funky. Spicy Belgian yeast. Earthy saison flavors and a good amount of pale malt . Mild bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and crisp. Overall, this is much like many American saisons, earthy, spicy and herbal.

On tap @ Fat Heads Cleveland. Served in a tulip for around $5.00.
#1 is the anniversary beer at Fat Heads. I remember trying it during their opening weekend and not being blown away. But I remember there being something there, so I was thrilled to finally get to try it again.

The tasting experience starts when the glass hits the table, and this looks nice – the beer is a straw color with some gold highlights. A nice white head keeps replenishing but stays around the half-finger mark. I notice a steady stream of active carbonation rising in the glass. The fact I can observe this means that #1 is a bit clear for a saison. While this isn’t unappealing, I would rate this beer much higher if it was cloudy and presented with a billowing head.

The smell is quite pleasant. Most uniquely, I smell a touch of fruit, some mild tart apple skin and a bit of spice (coriander?) and pepper. There’s not too much booze or graininess in the clean, Belgian pale malt base. For an American non-brett saison, this is good but the yeast could contribute a bit more character instead of a middle-of-the-road approach.

Likewise, the taste is very pleasant but lacks any real uniqueness. Things start out with a mixture of sweetness from the Belgian candy sugar and malt and fruitiness from the yeast. A touch of booze is present but doesn’t overwhelm. Some pepper, coriander and even honey touches are evident. A slightly grainy cracker base lets it all happen.

The mouthfeel is decent – the beer is medium bodied and, although a bit on the chewy side, thankfully does not end up being too sticky. There is a very dry finish, which seems mandatory for American saisons. All the while, a nice level of carbonation makes this refreshing. Overall, this is a good American attempt at a saison. I like how the beer is sharp, pleasant and has some nice fruitiness underneath. I just wish, as with most of the Fat Heads Belgian brews, that a bit more character from the yeast would show through.

On-tap at Cole's. Fruity bubble gum aroma, along with yeast and white pepper. No head, apple juice colour. Sweet, not cloying, very drinkable and refreshing. Average mouthfeel, carbonation right there. Lots of lace dots.Served too cold, but still very nice.
