Served on tap the brewery in a pint glass.
Look: Golden brown, with a slight off-white head with good retention. Plenty of finely-bubbled lacing.
Nose: Quite sweet, sugary, almost like cotton candy. That’s about it.
Attack: Starts with the sweet — almost artificially sweet. A hint of malt underneath, but overwhelmed by the sweetness. Is the sweetness perhaps the coconut water? It’s not an ingredient I’m familiar with. I’m not tasting the vanilla.
Finish: Some late bitterness, but the sweet still comes through.
Mouthfeel: Medium, just enough carbonation.
Overall: This may be a brew some people really like; guess I’m just not one of them. While the taste is improving slightly as it warms, I’m really not much enjoying this beer. It tastes … artificial. I can’t find any resemblance to any Robust Porter I’ve ever had. The appearance is the best part of it — it looks really nice.
This is, though, a good brewery, and I have enjoyed — and will continue to enjoy — many of their beers.
