Cask at Volo Cask Days 2009.

Pours a clear light brown, some amber highlights, very thin white head forms, quickly disappears to nothing, no real lacing.

Smell is alright, grainy and a bit astringent, some malt sweetness, caramel and corn syrup, very biscuity, lightly fruity and some floral, but nothing much going on, aroma was much better sunday.

Taste is similar, lightly malty, grainy, floral, bit of fruit, caramel sweetness, butter, biscuit, yeast, has a harsh flavour profile I don't like.

Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with low carbonation. Not very good, on saturday morning it was just about undrinkable, full butter and just not awful. Sunday if was better but I'm still unimpressed. Don't think I've enjoyed any of MacLeans recent offerings.

I poured this cask ale at Volo as part of their cask days, and then had the pleasure of drinking it the next day. It was a slow mover, which is too bad - Charles MacLean actually does English styles very well.

Pours a rich brown with a bubbly tan head that dropped to a collar. Strong caramel and fruit aroma, with a limited hop presence. Flavour is definitely malt driven, with chocolate, fruit and caramel combining to deliver a moderate sweetness. Quite fruity throughout, with a lightly bitter finish, and more of an old ale than most North American offerings. I don't know where Sammy gets the sourness from. I didn't pick it up on either the Friday or the Sunday. Body is medium with low carbonation.

Again, I think this is another solid attempt at a style from MacLean, and another one that I enjoyed. I hope he continues to send these casks into the big smoke.

Enjoyed on cask at Volo 2009 cask days. A strong aroma, some roast and fruiitiness. Taste is coffee-ish roast, weak body. Dark brown with good bubbly head. Some citrus. Off the mark as an old ale, and has the consistent sourness of MacLeans, hat detracted from flavour.
