11/4/2014. 22 oz bottle purchased at Full Throttle Bottles, poured into a large snifter. Pours with thick, forthy, white head that takes a long time to dissipate and leaves plenty of lace on the sides. Dark mahogany and somewhat cloudy. Aroma is of toasted malts and caramel, a bit nutty too. Slightly sweet, with a bitter finish. Fairly light body, a bit fizzy, not a long finish. A tasty beer.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a hazy, dark mahogany brown with a fine one finger khaki head with great retention and lots of lacing. Aroma of toasted malt, piney hops, cocoa and hints of citrus; mildly earthy. Flavor follows aroma with dry toasted malt, hints of earthy chocolate, citrus and piney hops. Finishes with nice piney, slightly resiny hop bitterness. Medium bodied with nice peppery carbonation. A classic Cascadian Dark Ale in both smell and taste. The hops are reminiscent of the Northwest forest with the solid, toasty malt body of the style. A nice new ale from one of Seattle's underappreciated breweries. (Love their hoppy winter ales). One of the oddest labels ever: black printing on a black background.
