I had a pint of Puget Soundian Black IPA, from a standard pint, at the brewery, on 8/4/2012.

Appearance: Puget Soundian is nearly black and has an inch of very dense, khaki head.

Smell: The aroma is classic CDA. There are strong notes of roasted malt, piney/PNW hops, and a complex floral hit at the end.

Taste: Puget Soundian tastes much less hoppy than it smells. The taste is dominated by fairly dry roasted malt character, mild bitterness, and some cocoa. Given the somewhat mellow hop flavors, Puget Soundian is almost like a really crisp porter.

Mouthfeel: Puget Soundian is medium bodied, smooth, and well carbonated.

Overall: I tend to like Schooner Exact’s beers and I almost always like CDAs so I’m not at all surprised that I really liked Puget Soundian. For the style, I found this beer much lighter, dryer, and better balanced than the typical offerings. Schooner Exact definitely excels at dark beer styles and Puget Soundian is no exception.

A new CDA from one of Seattle's better and lesser known small breweries. Served in a straight pint glass. Poured a lightly translucent black with an inch of dark khaki head that had good retention and lacing.

The aroma was a nice blend of malt, hops and roast, with a nice floral hop aspect being my favorite. The taste was very similar, a very nice blend and balance of the features of the style. The malt provided a solid base, the roast added a tangy sharpness and the hops blended it together with the floral notes lingering.

The body was nice, full without being heavy. Drinkability was very good, I'll gladly be having more of these. Overall, a wonderful take on a style I find to be a bit of a bastardization. Certainly worth some effort to find and try.

On draught at the Dog & Pony, Pugent Soundian Dark Ale (Imperial Project #2 - 6.5% ABV) is cola black with a small light tan head that leaves scattered, sticky lace.

Smell has a nice black malt char, a bit of citrus hops.

Taste is fairly acrid, with a firm bitterness providing most of the hop presence. It's a pretty good beer, but really drinking more like a porter then the CDA they were shooting for due to the modest hop flavor.

Mouthfeel is pretty slick, medium body, some viscosity to it.

Drinkability is pretty good, maybe a bit bitter, in conjunction with the bit of the malt, I might get a little fatigued unless it was particularly cold.

A: Poured a deep black with a small brown head, minimal bubbles and lacing

S: No nose to this beer whatsoever

T: My first sip was some floral hop notes with a roastiness. Perhaps a light coffee, some burnt chocolate

M: Medium body, not much in the flavor or body department

O: An average representation of the style
