This beer definitely showed promise upon initial sip but then slipped into mediocrity as I attempted to finish my pint.
The flavors are all over the place - not well balanced at all. I almost feel like this was an experiement with the style - that needs much more research.
Perhaps the recipe's been worked with since I had this in the Spring. At least I hope so...
4/2010 Update: I had this a second time and it was MUCH improved. Whether Beaux altered the recipe or not, I don't know. But the flavor profile had improved immensely.

I had a pint of Black Raven Hefe at the tap room. Served in a pint glass.
Appearance is a pale yellow color and hazy. It looks like pineapple juice.
Smell is faint, with soft fruit flavors. A spice clove essence and a bit of a melon scent.
Taste is clove and honey dew melon. A little yeasty bread flavor. It tries to rival the authentic Bavarian hefe.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied and clean, with a dry bitter aftertaste.
A drinkable hefe, but not as authentic smelling or tasting as some. This in the unfiltered version of the kristalweizen. Hence the yeast flavor.

M: Nice wheat, well carbonated, lighter bodied and crisp
D: At 4.8 ABV and very tasty, this beer is seriosuly delicous and drinkable

Served in straight pint glass. Pored the expected cloudy yellow with just over an inch of fluffy white head that dissipated almost immediately and left just more than a trace of lacing.
The expected aromas and flavors were there, perhaps just slightly muted. The body was a little crisper and sharper than most examples of the style. Drinkability was very good, if one were in the mood for a session of Hefe, this would be a prime candidate.
Overall, a slightly above average of the style. Certainly worth your time if you see it.

Black Raven serves this same beer in two forms: a filtered krystal weizen called Sun Thief, and this densely unfiltered hefeweizen. The hefe arrives in an imperial, handled stange glass with a beaming white head in opaque beechwood color. The taste is tart and spry and reaches into traditional Bavarian territory but with an interruption of exotic phenols in favor of an odd punkiness. This wayward flavor is workable but is highly disturbing in the aroma where clove and banana elements are corrupted beyond recognition in favor of an oppressive swampiness that kills all prospects of further enjoyment.
I can only speculate as to where this ale went astray. But the sullied fragrance is a big red flag.
