Stone Beer 2022 was made with a range of the highest quality Australian malts from Voyager Craft Malt and native wattle-seed. Pouring dark brown, this decadent brew begins with rich and chocolatey aromas, followed by dark chocolate, coffee, caramel and toffee flavours on the palate and finishes with a firm bitterness.

A limited-edition wood fired porter, Stone Beer is perfect for cold nights, sitting by the fire, beer in hand with mates.

Purchased at Chas Cole as a birthday present to myself in August 2022. Drunk in June 2023.

L: The beer pours ruby-tinged black with a persistent, fluffy coffee-coloured head. Utterly still chunks of sediment can be seen floating in the glass. The stealthy sediment had no chance of being detected during the pour - the beer comes in an earthenware vessel, making it impossible to see the gunk as it flows sneakily into the glass. The chunks' stillness attests to a lack of visible carbonation in the glass.

S: Sniffing for long enough shows notes of tangy, rich caramelised toffee, Raspberry Twizzlers, cola and burnt sugar, but it's all rather muted.

T: The dominant taste note is the caramelisation of everything, which is no surprise given the beer has had red-hot stones dropped in it. There's a sweet, malty richness to the beer that evokes luxurious toffee, molasses and even a bit of aniseed, but it all combines to head towards the end of the spectrum where it takes on a medicinal, cough medicine aspect. It's not unpleasant at all, but it leaves me grasping for the right descriptor. There's a cola and raspberry note that I seem to pick up in all dark beers, but importantly, there's no hint of the 10.3% ABV hiding in the beer's black depths.

M: Mouthfeel is restrained, with moderate carbonic prickle. Once the head subsides, the prickle disappears completely.

O: This one is like eating a mouthful of burnt sugar. It's tasty, sweet, decadent and will likely have me on the floor by the end of the bottle. It's definitely a winter sipper; born in the depth of fire and heat, it would be well at home beside a fire while winter rages the other side of the wall. Just drinking this one makes me want to light a pipe.
