Saison is a simply titled beer because of its classic profile. Made with an alternate yeast from the Dupont brewery, the recipe features a flavorful Czech pilsener malt and moderate hopping from liberty, santiam, and columbia hops. The yeast strain, much different than our house blend, yields a juicy and tropical flavor with contrasting spicy notes, but that character is well balanced with the malt and hop profile in comparison with many examples that lean heavily fruity.

Growler from the brewery. I've been anxiously waiting for this beer since I heard about it.
A clear light straw yellow with a dense, white head that falls off to a ring leaving minimal lacing, this looks decent. On the nose, it's immediately apparent that this is different from the other saisons in Upright's portfolio. Spicier, sharper, a little more lemony and with a cleaner, sharper profile and focus. A little grassy, a wonderful snappy, grainy malt character, a mild tartness (grains of paradise?) and a moderate hop note are present. The hops are minty, lemony and clean, sharp and in contrast with the slightly rounder, doughier Czech pils base malt. The palate opens crisp, clean and with a blend of dough, mint, lemon and spice. White pepper, grains of paradise, kaffir lime leaf are present, hallmarks of the yeast strain. The mid-palate has the mildly doughy, mildly honey-like malt character with cotton candy and a pleasant grain husk character that adds a little firming bitterness to the finish. Light in body, moderately carbonated, this beer has a long finish with a blend of spice, hops and a little bit of tannin. Spectacular.
