Scrap Iron was brewed as a nod to two specific historic beers from Belgium - Saison de Pipaix and Orval. Both of those are legendary and rooted well in the past, with fascinating profiles that exude character and individuality. Many modern interpretations of Belgian style beers seem to miss that mark, relying on a narrow spectrum within aroma, flavor, mouthfeel and finish. Instead, the Scrap Iron strives to integrate layers rarely seen anymore - metallic notes, semi-coarse bitterness, restrained Brettanomyces, dry hopping with low oil varieties and delicate yet purposeful spicing.

Appearance is hazy burnt gold with a big off white head leaving foamy lace in my flute.

Smell is barnyard and citrus, complex.

Taste is a little more inviting to my palate then the thought provoking nose. The sour citrus is pretty forward, grass pile, iron, and modest barnyard. Very complex but also tasty.

Mouthfeel is a little oily, medium-light body, drier finish.

Drinkability is on the higher side. It is refreshing and tasty (if you like rustic Belgians), but there's a lot of depth if you like to really ponder what you're drinking. Label said 2016 vintage, if this was a one-off, too bad.

Kind of a quintessential Upright saison. Huge head, opaque light copper color. Very floral; slightly bitter towards the finish, but not in a bad way. Dry. Delicious!

Bottle from Upright,

A moderately hazy orange with a dense, off-white head with excellent retention and minimal lacing, this looks solid. The nose is, eh, rustic. Grainy, raw, wort-like in ways, funky with a blend of lactic and mildly acetic sourness, a noticeable dry hop character with citrus and grass. There's a lot going on. A touch of dough is also present along with mild clove notes and toasted wheat bread. The palate opens tart with a noticeable blend of lactic acid, cut grass, a blend of clove and plastic phenols. In particular, the mild plastic notes bring to mind Orval. The mid-palate has a mild honey-like sweetness before a drying, grainy, carbonic/metallic finish that's grassy and hoppy. A touch of lemony/lemon rind bitterness is present as well. Medium-light in body and moderately carbonated, this beer has a long finish. This really lives up to its description. Recommended.
