On tap at Belmont Station 10/20
A: Staw colored with small whispy bubbles that were present through the entire pint. Minimal cloud white head. Nice lacing that clinged and slowly crawled to the bottom of the glass
S: This smelled like no Upright that I've ever had (which is almost all of them). Musty yeast smell with bready undertones. Hops aroma mingled very well.
T: Very good saison taste upfront. Mildly spicy with a bitter backbone. Quite dry with a little sweetness thrown in.
M: Not overly carbonated but fizzy on the tongue. I'm glad that the hop resin doesn't over take the pallet.
O: Glad I was able to get to try this wonderful take on a saison. Alex hit a homerun. I have to get a growler filled before it is gone.

A fresh-hopped saison? Hell, yeah!
Upright's latest entry into the seasonal friendly fracas of fresh-hopped lagers and ales. Although it represented at last weekend's FH fest in Portland, I tried HftV as a 5 oz. pour at Upright's Tasting Room earlier this weekend, then as a 16 oz. glass at Grain & Gristle.
A: Golden-hued, almost clear, although somewhat still-looking (except for a few hairline strands of the tiniest carbonation). Small whitish head doesn't last, but clings as a wide ring and splaying sheen. Modest lace, a drippy broken netting. The pint at G&G held much longer than the smaller sample at the brewery.
S: Good aroma: dry hay, crusty bread, dusty and musty. I'm not certain whether this is the 'house' yeast strain or the newly-introduced 'Dupont' strain, but it's an alluring noseful of 'farmy' goodness either way. A generous dose of Magnum hops offers a light grass and pine, nice complements to an already fragrant saison.
T: Immediately bready and peppery, crackers and green herbs/bitters. A follow-up flavor is strong 'citrus rind' bittering, a pithy lemon that offsets that dry spice. Moments of honeyed sweetness establish a fair balance, but the overall profile leans toward dryness, even a little chalkiness.
M: Mellow body with a gradually thickening mouthfeel. Starts to coat after just a couple sips, not really 'sticky' but sorta oily/viscous. Love the smooth carbonation; steady bitterness lasts a long while.
O: Quite tasty! Another solid saison from what, I'll admit, is one of my favorite local breweries. I appreciate the 'fresh-hop' take on the style... too bad hop harvest doesn't last longer.
