Lactovasilios (Sole Composition Series)Lactovasilios (Sole Composition Series)

Brewed by:
Upright Brewing Company
Oregon, United States

Style: Berliner Weissbier

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 3.80%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Jokingly named by Upright’s beer titler Angelo de Ieso after our pal Vasili, head brewer at Laurelwood, this brew is a one-off barrel fermented Berliner-weisse. It’s got a pleasantly funky and aromatic nose with the characteristic sharp sour flavor produced by large amounts of lactic acid bacteria. The Lactovasilios was a small batch blend that is a part of the Sole Composition series, only 176 bottles produced.

A - Pours a crystal clear, very light orange with a fizzy off-white head that is gone instantly.

S - Funky, tart lemon, some woodiness as well.

T - Just strong tart lemons.

D - Good carbonation with a very light body.

O - Tart lemon with a touch of funk and wood. Light and crisp and very refreshing. Not overly complex, but very nice.

Bottle shared by Thorpe in Dec 12 and Starr in Jan 13. Thanks guys.

Pours a hazed straw golden color with a quickly fading thin white head. Lactic aroma, slightly sour and cheesy, and light sulfur. Medium body with high carbonation, very refreshing. A little more sweetness in the flavor than nose, with a strong wheat base and strong lacto sourness in the finish.

Thanks Aaron! Pours a semi-cloudy light straw color. Light cheesiness in the background with some light lactic acid. Flavor has touch of cheese along with moderately-brisk acidity and a nice backing wheat character. Very light and dry. This wasn't quite as good as some of their other stuff, but still really quite nice.

Bottle (2012)

Thanks for the gift, NoSignsOfPain!

Hazy dark straw yellow in color with a small white head. Small dots of stick left on the glass.

Good amounts of oak, wheat, some mild lemon, and lactic sour character come through strongly.

The flavor follows the aroma, though it's not quite as sour as I was anticipating from the aroma. Mild lemon, earthy, farmhouse funk, wheat, and distinct oak combine very nicely.

Thin to medium bodied with high carbonation. Dry and disappearing.

Very nice; I was hoping for a bit more sour character, but this is an excellent beer.

A: Poured a cloudy straw yellow color with about a CM of white head that quickly vanished.

S: The nose is super funky and full of awesome oak character. Lots of tart citrusy-lemon and green apple in the nose. Very gueuze like.

T: Moderate tartness up front that is followed by a rush of juicy lemon/sour apple/white grape. Lingering fruit and oak character out the back.

M: Light to medium carbonation - very prickly. Light mouthfeel. Super dry.

O: This is awesome. Definitely one of the best American styled berliners that I have had to date. Brewers should takes notes from this; hold the fruit and barrel ferment!

On tap at Bailey's yesterday.

The beer pours a bright gold color with virtually no head or lacing. While the beer doesn't look particularly impressive, that's the only thing about this beer that was ordinary. The nose is bright and attractive, showcasing lemon, sour, bread dough and wheat. The flavor profile replicates the nose and is just as impressive. There's an attractive tart, tangy flavor to this beer that I really liked. Mouthfeel is light and refreshing; this is just the perfect beer on a warm afternoon.

Really, it's amazing how much flavor this beer delivers, considering the low abv. Another impressive effort from Upright.

on-tap at Belmont Station.
form notes.

Description provided by Belmont says this is a Berliner Weissbier aged in barrels.

Hazy pale yellow body with a fizzy, thin white head that dissipates quickly.

Tart lacto notes transition to vinous oak notes.

Faint lactic and citric tartness with more vinous oak notes. Light sweetness.

Medium body, prickly light carbonation.

A refreshing beer. Tartness is light, with the barrel aging a pleasant vinous oak character.
