This review is for the Sole Composition version, a blend of fresh Four and gin barrel aged saison. Bottle 35 of 62.
Pouring a clear orange with a dense, white head with good retention and lacing, this looks great. The nose is excellent. Reminiscent of Special Herbs, this one has bright citrus, lemongrass, juniper berries, rose hips, spruce and some pine. God, it makes me crave a gin right now. A modest saison base is also present, with honey, grain and crisp crackers. Excellent stuff, this is bright and refreshing.
The palate is lively, citrusy, a little earthy and has all the goodness that Special Herbs had. Lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, peppermint, light juniper berry characteristic and a touch of bitterness that's almost like quinine. This bitterness pairs quite well with the gin characteristics. The mid-palate has some sweetness, a blend of honey, cotton candy and a touch of rose syrup. I also get a touch of a mineral-like bite, not unlike a good sauvignon blanc. Drying on the finish with a blend of citrus, spruce and juniper berry, this beer is light in body and has a medium-high level of carbonation. Excellent stuff.
The second pour rouses the yeast, lending a breadier note and slightly dulls the aromatics. It also adds an fullness to the palate, making the carbonation seem excessive. However, this is still a tremendously enjoyable beer.

Four really lends itself well to blending - Fatali Four is definitely a favorite of mine, and this was also quite lovely. The gin barrel imparts some really nice flavors, notably spruce, juniper, a touch of wood, faint lime (or perhaps an illusion of a cocktail). Dug this - wish they bottled as a sole comp.
