it’s kinda like a west coast version of an E.S.B.

This was one of those weird crossover beers that went from being an ESB to an amber ale but didn't seem like there was a recipe change? Marketing I guess. Saying something is extra bitter isn't as inviting as an amber ale I guess.

Anyways, it is in fact amber in color, 1/2" off white head. Hits all those red, toffee and caramel aroma and taste notes. It is a thicker than average for style beer. Hopping is not miniscule.

As ownership has changed, I doubt they will be going back to the esb designation anytime soon. This is more like a red/amber ale esb hybrid. Its interesting for 12oz, but then the other 5 beers in the 6 pack you're just kinda like, "oh, this again, maybe I'll wait until next weekend."

Looks just like the amber bottle, except instead of "amber" says "E.S.B." . . . (and the notes on the side say "Calico Copper Ale is crafted in the English E.S.B. style."

But it is amber in color, toffee and caramel aroma and taste profile. More hopping than most, in the Ballast Point tradition. A good deal of malt heft for the style. Thicker than most esbs mouthfeel wise. Price was average for brewery, quality and style. A big thick esb with hops, although the bitterness of an esb is muted slightly by the heavy malt (6 types) bill. Check it out, if its still around, I got this when Ballast Point was just getting on the radar.
