Bottle at RBSG grand tasting, courtesy of Hayduke. Hazy amber pour, small but tight beige head. Nutty aroma, malts, brown bread. Taste is also kind of nutty, some caramel, pumpernickel, burnt toast. Hops come in at the finish for some light citrus.

a neat beer here, sort of a hybrid between an english brown or a nut brown, and an amber ale, which with the lighter english style brown, is not a huge reach, and i actually think the increased amount of nutty sweet kilned amber type malt is nice in the brown, with the dry dusty cocoa complexion and the bready old world english yeast that comes through a little bit. its just a little bit more complex than either of these would be on their own, committed one way or the other. its light in color for a brown, medium in body, but has quite a bit of residual sugar to it, a maple note, and some lingering cooked sort of sweetness, like a baked good of some kind. i think it could be drier, and that would make more room for the yeast to show itself, its mild now, but i like what it contributes even still. i thought this might really be a pounder, but with the sweetness, its still probably a relatively small doses beer for me, as much as i appreciate the effort to bring these two styles together and think they were rather successful with it overall. salmon river has been pretty steady in my experience so far, nothing drastic but no real misses either. this one would be good come the fall...
