Overall, not a bad choice. Poured deep brown with a .5 finger medium brown head. Very little lacing as the head quickly dissipated. Smell was slightly toasted malt, rye, a hint of hops and a trace of smoke. Taste was more malty than rye but finished with a slight hop flavor. Not as much Rye as I would have liked. Paired well with some mild cheddar and crackers.

A - Poured out an opaque, jet black color with a one-finger, light brown head of foam. It left thin traces of lace on the glass.
S - It smelled roasty with some pine notes. There was a touch of smokiness - maybe from the rye??
T - It tasted smokey at first, but as the beer warmed it faded away. Nice rye notes with sweet breads, pine and caramel. Good bitterness.
M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A light to medium bodied ale with a clean finish.
O - This really grew on me. Not just because it was a growler. Another solid brew from Kirkwood.

Enjoyed on-tap @ the Kirkwood Station Brewing Company (formerly known as the Highlands) in Kirkwood, MO for $3 (happy hour special!). Tapped from the White Tap Handle w/ "Seasonal" on the side & BLACK RYE IPA w/ Stickers into a 16oz Nonic Glass.
Aroma- The aroma is made up of the strongest rye you can find in a brew. A bit of spice and hop are in the background of this.
Appearance- Received with a .5 finger head that is off white. Has a dark brown body that is opaque for the most part. Leaves a bit of lace behind.
Flavor- Has a strong roasty flavor from the beginning and all of the attributes of a Brown Ale. Very malty with a light-medium hop bitterness at the finish. Not sure what to think here...
Mouthfeel- Light-Medium Bodied, Medium Carbonation, Smooth, and then a Slight IPA finish (medium hops, slight, etc).
Overall Impression- I did enjoy but what style is this? All the way through, it is malty, roasty, AND THEN has an IPA flavor. The aroma had Rye in it but then none in the flavor. I would say get a sample of this first and then see what you think.
