The great British ale was first brewed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the MG car factory in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. It was even named after the factory’s old run around car which was often parked outside the paint shop. Spattered in paint, the car became known as the “Owld Speckl’d Un”. The eagle-eyed might even see the resemblance between MG’s logo and the Old Speckled Hen label!

More than 35 years on, the great premium ale continues to be a finely balanced beer with a distinctive rich, malty taste and fruity aroma.

Cracked open a 14.9 ounce nitro can at around 50-55 degrees F with a BBD of end of May 2026. An aggressive pour into a pint glass resulted in a 1-finger creamy, ivory head topping a deep amber colored ale. Head retention is very lasting, with terrific lacing covering the inside of the glass.

Aroma is malty, caramel, toffee, white bread crust, fruity.

Taste follows aroma with some slight backend bitterness. Caramel maltiness, some fruitiness there (Fig, plum), a smidgeon of butter in there as well. A little grassy/earthy and bitter on the finish. Moderate dryness, and the bitterness prevails. Light bodied, watery yet soft feel. It's very drinkable.

Price point could be better for what you get: $3.50 per can including tax, but isn't too bad. Would I buy something else for the same price next time? Yes. Cheers y'all.

Copenhagen 24/12 2015. 35,5 cl bottle from Skjold Burne, Brønshøj Torv, Brønshøj. In the classic clear glass bottle with the label with the name of the beer in black letters surrounded by quotation marks.

Pours clear copper brown with a white head. Settles as a flimsy layer of foam. Very moderate lacing.

Aroma of malts and caramel sweetness with a little brown sugar. A little sourness peeking in. But not a very distinct aroma.

Soft carbonation and watery palate. A bit flat.

Caramel and toffee give some sweetness which is followed by a medium bitter aftertaste.

Nice enough English bitter which is only moderately bitter after all.

Look: After the nitro hiss settles, a smooth pour yields a lusciously rich amber beer to fill the glass, along with a creamy off-white head

Aroma: Light toffee, cereal grains, freshly baked bread, earthy and herbal hop notes, and some yeast. Pure British Pale Ale all day

Taste: Waves of rich and slightly sweet malt begin to shine with dough, warm bread, and lightly toasted bread all in play. Some toffee peeks in throughout and lightly herbal and earthy hops keep it balanced until some fruity yeast phenolics close it out

Mouthfeel: Full, smooth, medium carbonation, and silky smooth and soft on the finish

Overall: This is some good stuff. I hadn’t had this beer in awhile and never rated it so had to score some to do so – for science. It’s a delicious and well-made English Pale Ale that is not only good but has a totally different feel for a packaged one with the nitrogenation aspect. A winner and recommended

The bar’s beer list labeled this beer an ESB, after checking the brewers website, I confirmed it was mislabeled.

On Nitro draught. A medium/dark caramel brown color with high clarity, and a decent head with some retention that leaves some slippery curtain lacing.
Faint aroma of bread on the nose.
Flavor is of earthy English malt, hints of caramel & toffee, soft hops bitterness to balance and a light mouthfeel.
A very enjoyable English Ale.

From a bottle, poured into shaker glass. Big thick head that slowly goes down, topping a dark caramel coloured beer. Some malt on nose, but taste is definitely malt forward. Decent.

I got this on nitro at Limerick’s in Wausau. Wanted to try this classic English pale ale, and it really doesn’t disappoint. My daughter is playing violin with some old timers. Really fits the mood. The beer tastes strongly of copper and classic English bittering hops. The nitro treatment really works well with the style and atmosphere. Would definitely get this again, even if Oktoberfests are in season (which they are: I’m only slightly jealous of my wife’s 3 Sheeps Oktoberfest!).

Tried it for the first time and I have to say it’s nice. It has a welcoming aroma and the first taste is unique. The citrus note does continue through and the after taste is pleasing.
