I don’t think I’ve ever had a beer brewed with apples before, the most I’ve seen is apple brandy barrel aged beers. I’m not so sure that a Weisse is the best style to utilize them in, but I’d love to be proven wrong. If they’re going down the sour route I’d assume they work better in a Gose or a spontaneous Wild Ale. Let’s see what this is like though
Pours a cloudy pale yellow with a finger of white head that quickly fades to thin ring and leaves no lacing
Perhaps unsurprisingly, this pretty much just smells like a cider. I’m picking up on aromas of baked apple, cinnamon, coriander, lemon zest, and light doughy malt
It’s really not that tart in taste, further blurring the line between it and a semi dry cider. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting green apple skin, lemon yogurt, coriander, light bready malt, and vanilla. The swallow brings notes of baked apple, sweet vanilla, cinnamon, doughy malt, and light caramel. The tartness increases a bit as it warms thankfully, mostly up front
A medium body pairs with moderate tingling carbonation, resulting in a crisp and lightly tart beer. Finishes totally neutral but veers sweet in taste
While this is technically pretty good, it’s really not what I’m looking for in a beer, even in a sour style. Still, it’s a worthy and bold experiment. Hopefully more brewers try adding apples to other styles
