From the Sept 2012 batch. Cellared for a year and sampled on December 15, 2013.

It pours a basic brown color with a short-lasting off-white fizzy head that faces to a ring with little lacing left behind. Mildly cloudy.

The aroma almost makes me think of grapes or more precisely, champagne! I expected more malts considering this is a Scotch Ale but it said to be based on an old recipe and this is over a year old. There are malts but they are subdued. So is the alcohol.

The body is about medium and feels rather smooth all considered.

The malts can be found a bit more so in the taste and as it warms the malt characters do come forward with each ensuing sip. But there is still a tart green grape character like champagne or sparkling wine that sets this off a bit. Moderate bitterness atb the end which should be better defined as tart.

I happened to pick this up after it had been aged a year so I was unable to try it when it first came out. Fresh might have helped me rate it higher.

Sept 2012 batch
Poured from a bottle into a tumbler pint, the beer is a light, bright, caramel coloring with a thin, sparse, filmy coating on the surface. Caramel and sugary sweet aromas are light, but rich. Flavors are much more rich, with a light, sharp sweetness of caramel and a bitter, hoppy undertone. Roasting and sugary character lends itself to the carbonated, light body for an overall crisp feel. There are some earthy tones on the end of the palate, as well. Interesting take on the style. Sweet, slightly cloying finish with a hint of drying bitterness. Interesting brew.

Pours a slightly hazy orange amber color with a decent off white head that quickly dissipates to a cap and leaves spotty lace on the glass. Smells of sweet malt represented by lots of caramel and some dark dried fruits. There's a hint of earth and a bit of orange peel that perk up my nose a bit. The flavor is not what I was expecting. Lots of orange flavor along with other dark fruits, candy sugar sweetness, a hint of caramel, a bit of earth, a touch of ethanol. to remind you its 9+% Medium body with a light to moderate level of carbonation and a sweet slick mouthfeel. Its a bit sweet, it tastes nothing like any modern Scottish ale I've ever tried, but I really kind of dig it. Tastes a lot like CuraƧao mixed with a malty beer.
