A: Pours an inky black with hints of opaque mahogany when held to light. Large, creamy, khaki-colored head that lasts.
S: Sweet and vaguely smoky. Hints of molasses, baking chocolate and wood-fired espresso beans.
T: Bittersweet dark chocolate with roasted malt. Tiny hints of smoke puff around the sweetness of the malts. Freshly baked honey wheat bread and espresso tones are lurking here as well. Roasted bitterness pleasantly lasts through the finish.
M: Creamy mouthfeel with a medium to light body. Moderate to mild carbonation that surrounds the palate, but doesn't attack it.
O: This is one of my favorite styles of beer and this is an excellent example of it. Unlike other American Schwarzbiers, this is pleasingly neutral and doesn't play into chocolaty stereotypes. Hints of smoke and bitterness from the roasted malt more than nod towards old-world, German examples of the style. Sessionable and delicious, I can (and will) drink copious amounts of this.
