Never heard of this one before, but I've enjoyed Sun King other offerings. Poured on a slow Monday at Claddagh's Irish Pub in Plainfield, IN.
A: Burnt orange with a dull luster to it; head appears to have been poured off, as is standard practice in a bar. No lacing or retention.
S: Thick, resinous grapefruit, orange marmalade, and peach tones, giving this a heavily hopped character that is quite potent. It's American hops on top of American hops, with a sweet butterscotch foundation beneath; typical, but not unenjoyable.
T: Hop bitterness shows through in all its oiliness, drying the tongue with a slick astringency. Like many big American IPAs, it's a fairly heavy blend of creamy caramel malt and equally filling hops - you'd think the bitters would cut through the sweetness (and they do, to an extent), but the thick pines do a lot to add to the richness of an already rich palate. Maple, buttery caramel, and a bit of boozy vanilla finish this one out, a reflection on all the malt used to brew this beer.
M: Moderately heavy body with a sparkling carbonation: enough fizzy bubbles to give it a drinkability perfect for a with-dinner beer.
O: Here's an oddity: a well-crafted IPA that I don't think I'll be drinking again anytime soon. It's not that I don't like it, it's that I've had this beer before it falls kind of flat on my palate. I'm sure whatever I felt was wrong with this brew was more me than the actual craftsmanship; all things considered, I can still say I'm pretty satisfied.

I typically don't love rye beers, but this one was very good. Poured a very nice deep copper color with good head and lacing. Nice sweet malty scent with a nice rye spice kick. Great flavors, with a good pale ale malt sweetness, a nice spicy kick from the rye malts, and a wonderful citrusy hop finish. Went down very well, too, without the extra heat usually given by the rye and high abv.

32oz Swing-top growler filled at the Brewery. Served in a Sun King Pint Glass.
A: A sizable amount of fluffy, cream colored foam sits comfortably until it fades into a thin layer. In the glass the beer appears light red, with some very nice clarity. Lacing is solid, leaving remnants all over the glass.
S: Some faint hops, and some spiciness from the rye. Also light malty notes.
T: A mix of some earthy and citrus hops are most obvious right away. There's a large amount of bitterness, which really comes in to play on the finish. Some light malts and spicy rye are present, but pretty subdued.
M: Thin-Medium bodied. The rye helps make this very velvety on the tongue. It does feel slightly thin for such a hopped, IBU intense beer.
D: 10%??? Sure doesn't taste like it. The ABV is masked masterfully and not even remotely a factor. The 90+ IBU's however are. After about 20oz or so, my tongue and palate are bruised and beaten. I'll finish off the growler, but that's more than plenty.
When it comes to Hoppy Red's, I seem to be pretty polarizing for some reason. This brew actually reminds me of Stone's XIII, which I didn't care that much for. I felt this beer really needed some sweetness, and perhaps a slightly different hop profile. I like the added addition of rye, which almost always seems to be a positive.
