I acquired this beer from an associate at work, but it is on deck for the next review. Using a different Bruery Glass, I served this beer at 52 degrees. The pour created a frothy and creamy light tan two-fingered head with above-average retention. The slow dissipation left some lacing on the glass. I am charting the color around SRM 34; dark brown, nearly black with dark mahogany hues. Overall the appearance of the beer is above average for this style.
Nosing the glass, I smell char, Maillard, maple, medium chocolate, medium coffee, molasses, caramel, nuttiness, musty, earthiness, and bready malts. I am concerned this beer was not stored correctly. I am getting some funky off flavors that I should not.
The flavors are wonderful except for the off-flavor of musty cardboard with mushrooms. I taste are molasses, caramel, maple, chocolate, coffee, Maillard, char, earthiness, toasted bread, roasted malts, and a slight floral hint.
The mouthfeel is creamy. The body is medium, has a medium carbonation, and a lasting unpleasant finish.
Sadly this beer has suffered improper cellaring and handling. The off-flavors just kill this beer. I am not sure if the beer was like this from the brewery, I assume not. The maple does come through nicely and if the beer did not have any issues this would have been a lovely sipper.
