Some may call this a malty double IPA, some a hoppy barley wine. We prefer that it not be classified. We think of it, simply, as our strong winter ale. Intense hop aromatics and flavor (think pine, candied orange) blended with just enough malt sweetness to balance out the palate.

(draft pour at Monk's Cafe a few days ago... served in an Allagash chalice shaped glass... review from recollections - it was my third beer following a Stille Nacht and an Avec Les Bons Voeux, oh mercy!)

'American Strong Ale' will always incite a long-standing association and love-hate relationship (more love in latter years) with Arrogant Bastard... Monk's will forever now have a stellar tap list, but still serve too cold... Hazy, murky appearance upon glass-down; amber muck with a spitty froth clinging for life... The style designation here is apt, because this was one bulbous malt bomb sodden with sumptuous, oniony-spicy hop tinglers.... The malt was messy and mealy, but the spicy hop acids prevaled in counterbalancing the granola bar milk... I didn't quite labor through sips, but the unhinged static was the elephant in the glass... wouldn't seek this out unless I could score a bottle - Maine and Monk's serve their beers too cold and it ruins any attempt at intimate investigation. On tap, lots of sweet caramel malts, grapefruit hops. Mild hoppiness. Half way between a strong IPA and Hoppy Barleywine. Nice.
