330ml bottle poured into a Delerium Tremens tulip glass
Look: Described by the bottle as a 'wild saison' - pours a dark, slightly murky, amber with a fingers-width of white head. Head diminishes over time to a foamy cap with minimal lacing on the sides of the glass. Some sediment, although much of it remained in the bottle.
Smell: Well, it certainly smells like a saison - there's definitely whiffs of citrus and hops there, with a hint of apple(!) and a slight vinegariness once the beer has warmed up a bit. It's not overpowering and there's no indication that the beer was 'off' in any way (best before July 2015)
Taste:Hops, front and centre - this is quite unlike some of the 'proper' Belgian saisons I've had which tended to be slightly fruitier and more acidic. I'd go so far as to say that the hoppiness is pretty overpowering and up there at American IPA levels. It dominates the flavour and not in a good way.
Feel: Slightly fizzy and very dry - again, the hops are overpowering pretty much everything, even after the beer has had a bit of time to 'breathe'.
Overall: Swing and a miss, I'm afraid. Started off ever so well with look/smell but went downhill rapidly from there. A bit too hoppy for my tastes - not quite a drain pour, but perilously close.
