Drunk at the restaurant while on a trip to Romania with a friend.

European pale lager look. Fine brew. Easy to drink with the meat speciliaties of the restaurant.

I liked it!

Reviewed from notes taken in Summer 2014.

Served on-draught into a bierkrug at Caru Cu Bere in Bucharest. Cost was 9 lei per 400ml pour.

HEAD: 1 finger worth of white colour head. Boasts nice thickness and creaminess to its approachable consistency. Decent complexion; could be brighter. Leaves light uneven lacing as it recedes, which takes about 2 minutes.

BODY: Clear translucent yellow. Clean.

Appears adequately carbonated. Not a unique or special appearance within the style. Generally appealing, but there's room for improvement.

AROMA: Fresh yeast with a hint of lactic acid and funkiness is the first thing I notice. Funky barely. Helles malts. Grassy (probably Noble) hops.

A pleasant aroma of mild intensity, lacking any overt alcohol or off-notes.

TASTE: Clean barley. Light lactic funk. Helles malts. Heavy grassiness from Noble hops. Creaminess. Pilsner malt.

Simple but pleasant and enjoyable. I like it in a general sense, but it's not an intricate or subtle beer even within the style.

Average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, refreshing. Perfectly carbonated. Soft. Suits the taste well.

OVERALL: Very drinkable. I'll murder my glass with ease. A lovely table beer, but by no means world class or notable on an international level. I might get it again if I find myself back in Bucharest.

Wiseman Nick reporting from Bucharest. Review written from notes.

Served in a .4L glass mug.

Appearance: Body is crystal clear and golden in color with light visible carbonation. A dense, half-inch, creamy, white head sits on top and drags impressive lacing: leaves foamy notches all the way down. The head retention isn't fantastic, but still pretty good for a lager.

Smell: Sweet and sour malt bill; good dosage of Munich malts (I'm guessing). Lager yeast added a mild funky component. Also got leafy hops. Smooth.

Taste: Sweet, grainy, leafy, grassy, and resinous. The hop bitterness is pretty mellow - suiting for the style I suppose - but there seems to be a lot of hop oiliness. Very smooth and creamy, with light spicy notes that build throughout the session. Lager yeast too.

Mouthfeel: Creamy, malty, and definitely thicker than most beers of this style. Gets prickly toward the end, especially if drunk too fast. As noted above, pretty oily too. Thick, full, and very nice.

Drinkability: Not as sessionable as most lagers out there due to the added body and flavor. One .4L mug should be enough for a single sitting. Pairs great with Caru' cu bere's traditional Romanian cuisine. If you are in Bucharest, you must go to Caru' cu bere and try this beer! (Must try the food too!)
